Rooting android phones with gentoo

Is it possible to root an android phone with gentoo? I've seen my friend at one time chroot into someone else's fedora system with a livecd and change the credentials. These two things might not be the same thing, but I'd appreciate some information regarding it.

This is perfectly possible. I've rooted three different phones on my Gentoo system.

The procedure is a bit different depending on which phone you have though. The easiest way is normally to use UnRevoked ( http://unrevoked.com ) if your phone is supported. Just connect the phone in usb debugging mode and start the program. This will give you a custom recovery installed and from there you can do a nandroid backup and install zip files from your SD card.

I've heard about unrevoked, but was thinking more along the lines with using the OS through terminal instead. Besides, I think that unrevoked won't work on an HTC Evo running OTA froyo.

Yeah it is also possible. I just thought you wanted an easy solution. If you want to do it manually you need to get the SDK installed with the fastboot binary. You can then flash the custom recovery manually from terminal with adb and fastboot.

CyanogenMod has a quite good wiki you can follow here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com

Not sure if there is a guide for the EVO though, but it might answer some of your questions. You can also check http://forum.xda-developers.com for a guide or something. Gentoo should not hold you back anyways.
