This post is from my new Gnome desktop.

After nearly a week of installing, compiling, configuring, I now understand my linux system. Now. I start emerging my nwn and I'll be happy.

But of course, now I have problems with the

Code: Select all

su root
password: (correct password)
Authentication invalid
::shrug:: Do I need to change my user privledges?

You have to be in the wheel group. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=23378

Nope, you just need to add the user that's trying to use su to the 'wheel' group...only members of the 'wheel' group are allowed to become superuser =) To do this, open up /etc/group in your favorite text editor (nano, vi, whatever, so long as it can save plaintext =)), and in the entry that looks something like:

Code: Select all

wheel::10:root
add a comma and the username you want to be in the group -- no spaces, though! =) Next time you log in as that user, you should be able to su just fine. Other useful groups to add your user to would be 'audio', and 'games' for starts ^_^

It's all there, it doesn't let me log in the gui as the root either. I dunno if something happened to my password. Maybe I'll try booting with the cd's and setting my root password again. Thanks :-)

I'm a member of Wheel, audio, games and wheel. But I dunno how to set up my sound on gnome :-|

another option, if you don't want to go the CD route, is to boot into single user mode. if you use grub, just hit 'e' when you've selected your gentoo entry, then select the kernel line and hit 'e' again, go to the end of the line, add 'single', hit enter, and hit 'b' to boot it. That should boot you straight to a root-level prompt, where you can change your password. (It's sounds complicated, but it's really not ;-)) It won't change your menu permanently, so next time you reboot, you'll be fine. After you're done, you can exit, and it should continue booting normally.

[If you use lilo, just add 'single' after typing in your label.]

Meh, I just logged on the chroot with the CD1 and I fixed it :-) That's how I fixed a lot of errors I made.
