It sounds like you are having problems with your fonts.

Have you tried not using freetype? Also, there is a bindist flag that will allow better rendering of freetype fonts, maybe that will work.

Just some thoughts,

This is a wild a guess, but do you have the correct symlinks?

Code: Select all

micah@DaUnknown ~ $ ls -al /usr/lib/libfreetype.so
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2008-01-02 15:47 /usr/lib/libfreetype.so -> libfreetype.so.6.3.16
micah@DaUnknown ~ $ ls -al /usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2008-01-02 15:47 /usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6 -> libfreetype.so.6.3.16

Actually when I came across your thread I did a search here in the forums and I found a few threads about Opera crashing X and freetype.
searching the web I see a few too. Sadly none of them have been solved or even have a clue, so you might be on to something. It also appears
to be happening on AMD64. Now don't feel to bad my Opera on x86 does doesn't crash, but, it does not handle java script well at all, half the websites
I frequent that use it don't even show up or the page never finishes loading. It's always irritated me :evil:, I've kept firefox around for those rare times :wink:
I'll keep looking

Interesting thread.

1. Opera has a couple of options for dealing w/ fonts:

Enable Core X Fonts
Enable Xft Fonts
Draw Anti Aliased Fonts

2. Opera's defaults are 'enabled' for all the above. You might try de-selected Xft and Anti Aliased.

3. Since you have a link that always fails -- doesn't on my system, but I'm x86. -- could you try the following.

4. opera -pd /tmp/testX

5. Select user mode (View -> Styles -> User)

6. Go to the link that causes a solid failure.

7. Does it crash X?

8. The fonts in the page look pretty standard (Verdana, Arial, Helvetic)
The sites css also uses font-family: "Lucida Console", Monaco, monospace;

9. Opera (beta stuff) has a 64-bit image -- you might give that a shot.

Good luck.
