minimal install cd locking up

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

minimal install cd locking up

Post by SandStar » Mon Jul 19, 2010 1:04 pm

I'm trying to install Gentoo using the minimal install cd on a (very) old laptop.
It's a HP Omnibook Xe2 that has run Gentoo for several years.

It now has a new harddisk but the newest install cd is failing at me.

At first it didn't got any further than:

Code: Select all

scanning for wd7000...
Using the noload=pata_qdi suggested here I was able to continue the booting process only to have it halted again with the following message:

Code: Select all

Looking for the cdrom
Attempting to mount media:- /dev/hda1
Media not found
No bootable medium found. Waiting for new devices...
Looking for the cdrom
Attempting to mount media:- /dev/hda1
Media not found
could not find CD to boot, something else needed!
Determining root device...
Could not find the root block device in .
Any suggestions?

Have you double-checked the integrity of the iso image? I had a bad image do this to me once. re-downloading the image cleared the problem

Don't you have other Linux CD-s laying around? For instance, I have almost all versions of Knoppix, SystemRescueCD, GRML, several Ubuntus. One of them certainly will boot.

Yeah, try SystemRescueCD, I'm sure that you will be able to boot with that one.

I also use SystemRescueCD myself to do an install. It is based on Gentoo and really allows you to get a feel for your hardware on recent kernels.

If the bios supports netboot I've used that once for a http://boot.kernel.org/
It was pretty cool. No Gentoo image to choose from though ;-(

small update. The problem persists. The ISO checks out fine.

I've currently "fixed" it by installing Debain stable and it has been running fine ever since.
