Shutdown button on KDE4 start menu (Lancelot) not working

  • Quote

Post by szensz-siempre » Mon Jun 21, 2010 5:41 pm

Greetings all,

For some reason the shutdown button on the KDE start menu is not working. I am using lancelot, but the same error is replicated using the standard plasma widget for the kicker and for just shutdown/reboot.

Any ideas where I should start looking for a solution??

Thanks in advance

As far as I know KDE shutdown stuff only works if you are running KDM as display manager... Are you using KDM?

Which plasma theme do you use? If you changed it recently, revert to Air or Oxygen and try then.

I had similar problem recently...

Thanks for the replies.

I use compiz-fusion as my display manager, and my plasma theme is Air, but reverting to defaults on these does not seem to help. At the moment I have to issue

Code: Select all

kdesu "shutdown -h now"
from the konsole in order to switch off my machine, which isn't a train smash but it is pretty irritating.

I upgraded to kde-4.4 (from 4.3.3) hoping it would resolve these issues, but no luck.

Anyone have any other ideas???

Maybe you need sys-power/pm-utils and maybe add yourself to the following groups -

lp wheel audio cdrom video cdrw usb users plugdev de lpadmin

Cause those are mine and it works for me.

I don't think pm-utils is required to allow users to shutdown, and the groups dE_logics listed don't have anything to do with halting the system either. Have you checked your settings in the KDM login manager? Run systemsettings with root privileges and go to Advanced > Login Manager. Check the Shutdown page. Check these settings:

Local: Everybody
Remote: (your preference, since I assume you're only logging in locally; Only Root is the default)
Halt: /sbin/halt
Reboot: /sbin/reboot
Boot manager: (doesn't matter)

Check those settings, then log out, switch to a text console, and restart /etc/init.d/kdm. See if that works.

Hi MotivatedTea and dE_logics,

Thanks for the input.

I did check my kdm settings at /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, and confirmed them in the login manager section of the system settings so that they appear as you have suggested, and also made sure that in the Session Manager section "Offer shutdown options" is checked.

Could you tell me, if you run /sbin/halt as a normal user, does it shut down?

I think it must be a permissions problem, I don't understand because suspend buttons work, but shutdown and reboot don't.

No, a normal user cannot normally run /sbin/halt. But kdm is run from your initscripts as root, and they way I understood it, that is the program that would actually be calling /sbin/halt or /sbin/reboot, so it shouldn't have any problems with permissions. I don't really know what to suggest next. (You're sure you are running kdm, not another login manager like gdm?)

Yeah, pretty sure I am running kdm.

I have tried looking through log files but I have no idea where to look next. When I click on the shutdown option in the menu, then nothing happens, it should give me a screen to confirm my choice, but the menu just disappears and nothing else happens.

Any other ideas?
