Small slightly-related question: Why are you running AIM through WINE, when there are a multitude of (better, IMO) chat clients that support the AIM protocols that run natively?

i dont think they are better (imo) because they all lack an integral feature, direct connect, when gaim adds that, ill be happy to switch over

Direct connect and file transfers on gaim have never worked for me. Is there anything special that you have to do?

when installing wine-cvs (and other in-development stuff) i usually use the buildpkg (-b) option to get a binary package which i can reinstall it later in cases like this one where a newer wine version breaks stuff i really need.

i also do backups (burning most of the system except for distfiles and logfiles) on dvd-rw media. currently i use two discs per machine which i switch from backup to backup.

I ended up writing my own little program in QT that does nothing but transfer a file from one IP to another, since file transfers never worked for me in GAIM and hardly ever worked in AIM in Windows either back when I used Windows. File transfer in GAIM is buggy at best, non-functional at worst.
