Gnome gdm doesn't always log in automatically

I have my Gentoo system running exactly the way I want it apart from one annoyance. I use the Gnome desktop environment(64 bit) and gdm as my login. In the settings the enable autologin is selected for the appropriate user, however this only occurs about a third of the time, the other two thirds I am greeted with the gdm login screen requesting a username and password.

I know that this is a minor error, but I would really like the auto login to work all of the time, this allows the wife and other visitors to house to use my PC without needing to know my password. I hope that this is something simple and I am just having a dozey moment by not spotting it.

Is your xdm in boot runlevel? If so try default runlevel.

When I type

Code: Select all

rc-update add xdm default
I am greeted with the message:

Code: Select all

 * xdm already installed in runlevel 'default'; skipping
Is that covering what your asking?

it does, though as a point for future reference, you can:

Code: Select all

rc-status
or

Code: Select all

rc-update show
or to be more specific

Code: Select all

rc-update show default
For example:

Code: Select all

# rc-update show default
             apache2 | default
             distccd | default
            iptables | default
               local | default
           memcached | default
               mysql | default
            net.eth0 | default
            netmount | default
            nfsmount | default
                noip | default
          ntp-client | default
           rpc.statd | default
                sshd | default
           syslog-ng | default
      udev-postmount | default
          vixie-cron | default

I don't have heaps to add to your original issue, other than to enquire as to why GDM is even necessary in your case since you only ever have one user that will be using X.

Yes it does,

Sometimes if xdm starts in boot runlevel not all nessecary services are running for gdm to load correct. But that's not the problem. You can enable debug messages in gdm. After gdm failing to login automatically you can read them in /var/log/messages. Maybe something comes up.

I am the only user, however Gnome is not my only X graphical environment, just my default one.

I will take a look, I stupidly did not think of checking the log (d'oh!!!!). The next time it happens I will check and if it is unclear I will post the output on the forum :)

Solved.

There appears to have been a bit of issues with my graphics card driver, it didn't seem to affect my desktop too much (Compiz etc still worked fine) but I was noticing that sometimes on startup I would be greeted with the NVIDIA logo and other times not. I updated my graphics card driver to a more recent one and then reinstalled the driver.

Now my login screen works every time :)
