How many hours have you wasted staring at emerge's output?

You know exactly what I'm talking about -- and we're all guilty of it:

When you should be doing other, more productive things while emerge is running, you can't help but become entranced by its build output. So you just sit there, staring at it, until it completes. Or, if it's a large build, you look at its output for the the first few minutes, go off to do other things, but still end-up succumbing to the urge to occasionally check-up on it.

I'm almost completely sure all of us are guilty of doing this to some extent. So, I was thinking, how much of our short, precious time on Earth do you think has been consumed by idling staring at emerge's output?

As for me -- and although I've only been using Gentoo for about seven months -- it's not something I really want to fathom, so I'm content with not knowing.

What say you?

way too much - in the past ;)

now it's only several seconds (or minutes if it's something REALLY big like openoffice) to make sure that it even starts to build

after that I put it (the terminal) to the background, to another virtual desktop or use screen

I have a fairly good idea how long things will take to build. (genlop helps if I'm unsure.) If it's something short, I'll sit and watch. For longer builds, I will usually set it up and walk away.

I'm not all that concerned about the time spent watching emerge output. Sometimes, I'll sit in front of the oven and watch my food cook. 8)

Space out with insomnia for weeks on end when an installation goes bad. 8O

Just wish it wasn't as hot as Texas here. The heat from 8 cores going full speed is always appreciated more in winter.

Hell, that reminds me of my old days. I was often getting hypnotized when smoking da herb.
Now I stopped smoking it and use portage-2.2 for a long time. Things are just not the same

I like to run an emerge -e world when I have some friends over for diner.

I can imagine what's going on in their mind when they stare at my screen "wow this dude is a such a geek and he's actually hacking the NASA"

Joke of course
I'm all in !

I spent also lots of time watching it, and i like it.

But i wish that there exist a kind of "plug-in", to route it into a matrix like screensaver (for console and Gui) which shows the real output of portage, so it would be cool and informative for us.
It should be run optional vertikal like the matrix screensaver, but readable fo us, this would be so cool 8)

Not so boring like the original Matrix screensavers for me. I'm to stupid to decode it in real time, like Keanu did.

But portages output i can read mostely, especially on my slower machines.

Please, can i have it, come one , give it to me, i must have it !!!!

What do you think about this idea, someone who will programm it for us? PLEASE

Regards, Andy.

Better yet, create a cron daemon that will randomly build packages (with the -B option) so that no human intervention will be required to generate said output. Then have a web application stream its output in real-time so that you can see it no matter what machine you're on.

Hooking it up into a projector and then projecting it onto the side of your house would also be good idea. Nothing beats watching emerge output together with your buds in the backyard while having a barbecue.

Or, hell, you could even project it onto your ceiling, similar to those alarm clocks that show the time that way. Can't sleep? Stare at emerge output until you do.

Better than counting sheep.

I'm like Randy Andy about it.....
