"lpr -l" does not work; CUPS issue?

Split from my other thread since it is no longer relevant.

I attempted to print any postscript file (.ps) by utilizing the following command.

Code: Select all

lpr -l filename.ps
And it didn't do anything, no print job was sent to CUPS server. Removing -l option allows me to print, so I'm wondering if there is something wrong with CUPS?

I tried reinstalling both CUPS & foo2zjs (plus deleting /etc/cups folder), but it didn't fix the problem.

Perhaps the printer doesn't understand postfix and thus ignores your request? Still, I'd think the cups server would react in one way or another.

The lpr man page, provided by the cups package, does not include -l in the list of unsupported flags; however, it does say it's the equivilent of '-o raw'. Have you given that a try?

I did, and -o raw also failed to work.

Wait, after spending some time in octave mailing list, I assume that -l is reserved only for postscript printer, which means it won't work on CUPS. Is this correct?

I have no idea, but I almost guessed something to that effect the first time. I don't think there's many - any - raw formats that can be sent directly to CUPS. If I'm not mistaken, CUPS speaks IPP, not ps or anything like that. If you've found others making that claim, I'd say Apple simply did a poor job with the list of things that don't work in CUPS.
