As has been mentioned a few times in this topic, it is essential to always re-emerge all x11-drivers after xorg-server:

Code: Select all

emerge -1 $(qlist -IC x11-drivers)
If it still fails then post the output of these please:Post the output of these please:
  • egrep '^\((W|E)|X.Org X Server' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
  • emerge --info
  • egrep '^[^#].*(AGP|DRM|RADEON|EVDEV|SYSVIPC)' /usr/src/linux/.config
  • rc-status

I've re-emerged all the x11-drivers multiple times, to no effect.

The results of

egrep '^\((W|E)|X.Org X Server' /var/log/Xorg.0.log :

Code: Select all

I'm not geek enough to know what all of that means. And I certainly can't tell you what those funny symbols from the output of rc-status represent.

In any event, thanx for looking at this for me.

Pastebin full xorg log and (perhaps) blacklist those of the graphic
modules that you aren't actually using.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to use pastebin. wgetpaste keeps telling me that "apparently nothing was received," and when I try to paste in the box at dpaste.com, I get an error message that says what I'm trying to paste is too long.

Also don't know what you mean by blacklisting graphic modules I don't need.

Sorry for my lack of geekery.

Just tried wgetpaste again with the 'debug' option.

"Sorry, that's a bit long. This tool is for code that other people will read..." etc.

I have to say I would be really surprised if it has anything to do with the graphics. I am using NVidia card and dirvers, have no graphics related errors and have exactly the same problem with the loss of mouse in X after the X upgrade.

Do you know if there is a way to increase the logging level for the X keyboard driver and for whatever X libraries interact with it?

If you do:

Code: Select all

wgetpaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log
it fails?

One thing to do is remove all the graphics drivers from the kernel that you aren't actually using, rebuild kernel and modules, and install in /boot.
Make sure the /boot partition (if any) is mounted before copying the new bzImage over.

And be absolutely certain that the x11-drivers were emerged after xorg-server.
Do it like this:

Code: Select all

emerge genlop && genlop -l --date last week | egrep 'xorg-server|x11-drivers'

When I enable the 'debug' option in wgetpaste, I'm able to see the error message from pastebin. As I mentioned above, it's:

"Sorry, that's a bit long. This tool is for code that other people will read..." etc.

This is true whether I wgetpaste from my desktop (the machine affected) or I rsync the Xorg.0.log file over to my laptop (the one I'm using to type this) and wgetpaste from here. Also, when I try to paste the contents of Xorg.0.log directly into the input box at pastebin.com, I get the same error message.

If it's okay, I could try posting the contents of this apparently very large file here in its entirety. I don't know what the etiquette is on that.

Herewith the output of genlop -l --date last week | egrep 'xorg-server|x11-drivers':

Code: Select all

As far as rebuilding the kernel, I'm hesitant to do it for a couple of reasons.

One, I'm afraid of introducing another layer of error before I get this one figured out.

Two, I usually use genkernel, because rolling my own is a time-intensive process; does this mean genkernel is broken and I'll have to build all my kernels by hand in future?

If I have to I will, but I ain't gonna like it.

More on wgetpaste.

I just posted the output of genlop to pastebin, and wgetpaste worked just fine:

http://dpaste.com/185693/

Hope this helps.

I just realized that in my sleep deprived haze last night when I did the X.org 1.7 update, I ran this command:

emerge portage-utils; qlist -I -C x11-drivers/

As suggested by the output of the xorg-server upgrade and missed that this will just output what I need to upgrade. It starts with "emerge", so my brain took that and the end and figured this was your:

emerge -1 $(qlist -IC x11-drivers)

command....

Perhaps the ebuild's output should have that as two lines instead of one with a semicolon or just have the command to update the installed drivers. It might be why so many people are having issues and thinking they already updated their X drivers.

Just a thought.

I noticed that, thought it was a typo. :)

lizardbrain,

Generally genkernel seems to work just fine, though I never used it.
Yes it can be time consuming - at first.
After a while though, with practice and experience, and since genkernel always builds everything including the kitchen sink, configuring, building and installing a hand made kernel takes considerably less time.

Now back to business.

Have you tried moving your .fdi file, and trying without any?
On my xorg-server-1.7.6 box I have an empty folder:

Code: Select all

 ~ # ls /etc/hal/fdi/policy/
 ~ #
Nothing there. And no problems.

Mike --

Yep. That did it!

So what's the .fdi file for, anyway? I thought that when we moved from xorg-server-1.5 to xorg-server-1.6, we were supposed to abandon the xorg.conf file and use only the .fdi policy file.

Not that I'm complaining. As long as my desktop works, I work. And that makes me happy.

As to the building of a kernel: I can live with the longer compile time; I just go away and do something else. But I've found lately that I lied to myself when I was younger. While an older dog can learn new tricks, he learns them a lot slower, and imperfectly. And I'm an older dog. :wink: Configuring the new kernel by hand takes me hours.

In any event, thank you very much for your patience and help. Between the outstanding documentation and the excellent help on the Gentoo Forums, I'm pretty happy with Gentoo.

Thank you!

You're most welcome. :D

I never used those .fdi files, because I didn't need them. It was just a hunch to try that.

It's true that at first configuring a kernel from scratch can be somewhat daunting. The Linux Sea guide is extremely helpful and makes it quite easy to grasp. But there is still a learning curve.
And once a handmade .config file exists it can be used by successive kernel updates simply by copying it over and running make oldconfig

At any rate, if you are happy with genkernel, that's fine too. No problem at all.

Removing the (default!) policy file for the keyboard also solved my problem.

Thank you!

It seems like if I perform xorg-server upgrade too soon, I'd be sitting in the front of login screen w/o being able to type anything. Thank goodness for this thread, and the fact that I haven't upgraded xorg-server yet.

I'm having the same problem...but removing fdi policies did not fix. I'm trying to run a full hald system with evdev as the input...
here are my links:
egrep '^\((W|E)|X.Org X Server' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
http://dpaste.com/197926/
emerge --info
http://dpaste.com/197927/

Code: Select all

 # egrep '^[^#].*(AGP|DRM|RADEON|EVDEV|SYSVIPC)' /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_SYSVIPC=y
CONFIG_SYSVIPC_SYSCTL=y
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y
CONFIG_USB_VIDEO_CLASS_INPUT_EVDEV=y
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y
CONFIG_DRM=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915=y
finally: rc-status
http://dpaste.com/197929/
I've re-installed drivers. I"m at a loss...no keyboard in X is really frustrating!

Well, I only see your xorg log - that grep expression would catch only things that are
obviously wrong.
