No Keyboard after upgrade to xorg-server 1.7.6

At first I wasn't able to do anything with xorg. I had to rebuild all xorg drivers. Now it works but the keyboard does not work. The mouse works, but no keyboard.

Any ideas??

I've tried with and without xorg.conf... same thing happens in both cases.

Also, I've read though the other threads on this topic... but so far nothing has helped.

On one of my systems, I have the keyboard working to log in through KDM, but when I get to KDE, the keyboard no longer works. The mouse still works, which I find curious since keyboard and mouse are connected through the same USB dongle. Now, if I disconnect and reconnect the dongle, the keyboard starts working. I'm not sure if it is Xorg, KDE, or Udev which broke things.

Its a laptop computer so I have a built in laptop keyboard. I'd try it with a external USB keyboard but I don't have one.

Here is my xorg log file:

Whats weird is that I can hit the keys to wake the keyboard from sleep, but nothing comes on the screen when I type.

With xorg.conf, the log file looks a little different. Here is the log file: http://dpaste.com/183875.

Looking at the log file, the biggest problem I see is that there's a bunch of font errors. I don't know. All I know is that I have to meet a client tomorrow morning and I can't even get my computer working. I'm using links right now.

The font things are no problem.
That can be fixed by setting the correct FontPaths in xorg.conf, meaning that whatever font directories appear in /usr/share/fonts should be represented. Xorg does not do that by default. Mine looks like this:

Code: Select all

Section "Files"
    RgbPath         "/usr/share/X11/rgb"
    ModulePath      "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/misc/"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/OTF"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/corefonts"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/dejavu"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/Speedo"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/cyrillic"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
    FontPath        "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
EndSection
Now on to more serious issues:

Your /etc/make.conf should contain the following:

Code: Select all

VIDEO_CARDS="intel"
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev synaptics"
Your xorg.conf should contain:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
       .....
       Driver      "intel"
       .....
EndSection
rc services hald, dbus and consolekit should be started, run:

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/consolekit status ; /etc/init.d/dbus status ; /etc/init.d/hald status
and your USE flags in /etc/make.conf should include:

Code: Select all

hal dbus consolekit
now please post the output of:

Code: Select all

egrep '^[^#].*(AGP|DRM|INTEL|EVDEV|SYSVIPC)' /usr/src/linux/.config
and your emerge --info

Since Xorg does not work, I'm stuck with the console and links and links doesn't allow me to copy and paste files. I'll just paste them to a pastbin and give you guys the links.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf: http://dpaste.com/183929

Everything was enabled except for consolekit. I added that to boot and thats working now... but the keyboard itself still is not working.

As for the really long command that you wanted me to post the output of, It would take me forever to copy that over. But, in the config file, it said Y to everything except for CONFIG_SDN_HDA_INTEL... that was set to M.

I do have the hal, dbus, and consolekit use flags. Actually, I didn't have them but I just added them and did a emerge -uND world. Nothing was re-emerged though.

Check if evdev is enabled in the kernel

Code: Select all

# grep EVDEV /usr/src/linux/.config
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y
Did you re-merge x11-drivers?

Code: Select all

emerge -av1 `qlist -I -C x11-drivers/`
Did you try the xorg.conf generated by Xorg?

Code: Select all

Xorg -configure

Had a similar problem.
Forgot to remerge X11-drivers.
I think it was written somewhere in the messages from the last update.

Thanx xyz. :)

Indeed, at the end of the update, you will have a warning that says you need to reemerge x11-drivers.

belikeyeshua,

There is a real easy way to post output on pastebin (or whatever):

Code: Select all

emerge wgetpaste
Then post a file like this:

Code: Select all

wgetpaste /var/log/Xorg.0.log
And post command output like this:

Code: Select all

emerge --info | wgetpaste
Then paste the URL here.

---

Only if it still doesn't work, then:

Please post your emerge --info
And the output of egrep '^[^#].*(AGP|DRM|INTEL|EVDEV|SYSVIPC)' /usr/src/linux/.config
And the output of rc-status

I had the same problem last week. I did a normal update (Xorg 1.6.x to Xorg 1.7.x) and then did not work the keyboard and mouse. I compiled xorg-drivers again (of course with: INPUT_DEVICES = "evdev synaptics"). Als ich xorg-server V1.7 neu kompilierte, funktionierte Maus und Tastatur wieder wie vorher ohne Probleme.

Sorry for my bad english :wink:

Look for ABI incompatibilities in the Xorg log. I had to rebuild the evdev package.

After upgrading from xorg-server 1.6 to 1.7.6 this morning, my keyboard disappeared, too. When I ran startx, I got this message:

Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in S server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation
10706000

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/
peripherals/keyboard/kbd

Here are the respective results:

Code: Select all

----------------

xprop: unable to open display ''

----------------

gconftool-etcetera

 model =
 options = []
 overrideSettings = true
 layouts = []

----------------
I re-emerged all x11-drivers, added 'synaptics' to my make.conf, and re-emerged them again. My make.conf shows

Code: Select all

INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev synaptics"
VIDEO_CARDS="radeon"
consolekit, dbus and hal are all in my make.conf USE flags. Consolekit wasn't running, but starting it made no difference. I restart X after every change I try (I have to, because I have to log out of X to use the keyboard :) ).

I'm not using xorg.conf. Contents of /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-x11-input.fdi:

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
<device>
    <!-- Mouse configuration -->
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.mouse">
      <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">evdev</merge>
    </match>

    <!-- Keyboard configuration -->
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keymap">
      <append key="info.callouts.add" type="string">hal-setup-keymap</append>
    </match>
    <match key="info.capabilities" contains="input.keys">
      <merge key="input.xkb.model" type="string">evdev</merge>
      <merge key="input.x11_driver" type="string">evdev</merge>
      <merge key="input.xkb.layout" type="string">us</merge>
      <merge key="input.xkb.variant" type="string">en</merge>
      <append key="input.xkb.options" type="string">compose:menu</append>
    </match>
  </device>
</deviceinfo>

if you are upgrading you have to type

emerge portage-utils; qlist -I -C x11-drivers/

I also am guilty of not re-installing xf86 drivers before rebooting. I boot to kdm and had no mouse or kb. I chroot In, the xorg log showed a (EE) with evdev module mis match and following this thread ran,

emerge -av1 `qlist -I -C x11-drivers/`

This failed for me at installing nividia-settings. The build file is huge, only posting a bit of it will post the whole file and any others that are asked for.

http://pastebin.com/C6MiP3nx

I ran revdep-rebuild and it installed this package media-libs/freeglut-2.4.0-r1

If I run depclean, It fails with a error that nvidia-settings are not installed. Another world and it wants to install the package nvidia-settings, also fails.

I switched to opengl while in the chroot and is working...While booting, gives a error about evdev init goes by to fast to read the whole error.

Be sure that your kernel symlink is correct.

Code: Select all

ls -l /usr/src/linux
Should point to the kernel sources directory according to your uname -r result.

If don't, run eselect kernel list and then, select the right option doing eselect kernel set <NUMBER>

And finally, emerge --oneshot nvidia-drivers

This is great advice, I saw that the .32 kernel was pulled in with the update. I have my own reasons with not wanting .32 eselect and uname both match. --oneshot may have done the trick...I forgot about that command.
I am rebuilding it right now with ~86 my other box is ~86 and I seldom have problems with it.

I have also lost the keyboard after updating xorg-server (and libXi, libXtst, etc.) to 1.7.2.

I did recompile all the X11 drivers and evdev and did revdep-rebuild.

I can see no errors in the kernel, syslog, X or kdm logs.

Yet I cannot even log into the system, since kdm takes no keyboard input. (I can login through the console, there the keyboard works fine.)

With X running (kdm login screen), even the Caps Lock button does not light when that key is pressed.

Any ideas?

Your problem sounds kind of like the one I had a while back:
If you're using KDE then check whether or not you've set a setting that put required holding down a button for a long time before registering.

Thank you for the advice, but I am not sure I am following:
  • KDE has been working with no problems until I have made the unfortunate decision to upgrade xorg-server.
  • The fact that even Caps Lock button doesn't work with kdm (or xdm for that matter), in my opinion, indicates that the keyboard driver that X loads is fundamentally broken.
  • The fact that the keyboard works fine in the console mode (when X is not started), points specifically to the broken keyboard driver loaded by X.
Do I understand something wrong?

There's not much to follow, it's just something to check. My error coincided with an upgrade of Xorg as well (I had appearently switched it on myself, by mistake). So as it seemed the other suggestions hadn't paid off (yet) that it was something you could check up on. :-)

The problem is not confined to KDE. I use Gnome, and if I were to substitute 'Gnome' for 'KDE' in your post, it would accurately describe my situation (well, except for the fact that I start X with 'startx').

My keyboard also works fine in the console mode. It only stops functioning after I start X.

(Edit: Sorry for the slow fingers. This was in response to at, above.)
