Maybe totally unrelated, but when I tried to boot the Ubuntu 10.4 livecd (graphics card = nvidia 8800GTX, GTS240), I got zebra stripes... and, naturally, since it's Ubuntu, no way to kill the x-server. I couldn't switch to a different VT, either... not sure if they've disabled that, too, or if it was just a hard freeze. But as long as nvidia's proprietary drivers work, I'm totally cool with those.

It's an alpha or beta version, it's normal to have some weird bugs :P

know if that's a good thing.

Well, it's certainly not a bad thing unless you find it too noisy. Power management still seems to be a TODO item for the nouveau devs, which won't please most laptop owners.

xorg-server-1.8.0 so far seems to be rockstable.

Just installed xorg-server-1.8.0 yesterday. The only problem I had was I forgot to recompile xf86-video-ati, xf86-input-keyboard, and xf86-input-mouse because of ABI changes. :P

As soon as the k3b ebuild stops requiring hal, I can get rid of hal completely.

Any reason why you don't replace mouse and keyboard with evdev?

Well, it supports a myriad of input devices without any further configuration. I remember that the mouse driver never supported my Logitech mice without serious button remapping madness.

Did you have to create any config files in etc to get them working?

First problem here:

xrand is not working. After recompiling libXrandr and xrandr seems to work again but after restarting isn't working any more.

You're right, changing resolution just crashed X. (xrandr-9999 here)

I use to use setup two screens. I will try tomorrow putting the config statically in xorg.conf.

EDIT: no way. In other way, i'm ussing intel-2.11 with

x11-apps/xrandr (1.3.2@04/04/10): primitive command line interface to RandR extension
x11-libs/libXrandr (1.3.0@04/04/10): X.Org Xrandr library

are you ussing the same?

yes. intel-2.11 and xrandr/libXrandr 9999 up to their latest commit (including its deps) seems to be broken. Good for me that I don't actually need that functionality.
