how to change every user's Gnome Panel contents

  • Quote

Post by jody » Thu Mar 25, 2010 11:55 am

Hi

I have written an application which should appear on the
gnome panel of all users of a particular workstation
of which i am the sysadmin.

Is there some way to this comfortably (i.e. not instructing
every user how to add a launcher to the Panel etc)?

Perhaps there is some master gnome panel configuration file
that can be changed accordingly?

Thank You
Jody

I'm sure there is, but since adding a launcher to the panel is so easy you shouldn't be using a computer if you can't follow such simple instructions, I would think it would be much easier for you to post via the network instructions for doing this. It'll be good for the users' brains, too. 8)

I don't think there is. A new user gets the default files created for him and is on it's own from there on. It's not usually inheriting something from a template.

:D

Just out of curiosity i tried to find where gnome remembers my panel stuff,
but i couldn't find it. the directory '.gnome2/panel2.d/default/launchers/' contained some stuff i do have on my panel (firefox, revelation),
but other things like calculator, terminal or volume control are not represented there.

Thank You
Jody

It's actually in gconf /apps/panel/ somewhere. Mhm... actually, that might make it exploitable for script usage, if you are able to figure out the weird format they are using.

All I can say is good luck! Gnome gave me problems on Gentoo and on Ubuntu. I avoid the plague like Gnome. :P
