[Solved]Failed to activate desktop effects

[Letharion]

Kde 4.4
Nvidia-drivers 190.42-r3
Compositing type: OpenGL
No xorg.conf
Can't get desktop effects working.

I get this error message:
Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options.

Googling indicates it's a fairly common problem, but I can't find any solutions.

Did you run

I don't know why but I found I needed a (very minimal) xorg.conf which I generated with
