Black screen when exiting X

Post by janborgar » Wed Jan 22, 2003 9:28 pm

After doing an emrge -u system and then an emerge -u world, my screen goes black when shutting down X. Everything else looks normal. I don't think the PC locks up, cuz if i do ctrl+alt+del it reboots as normal. Any suggestions?
Im running fluxbox btw.

What happens when you hit ctrl+alt+Fn to switch to a virtual terminal? I've had X close a few times and leave me on virtual terminal 7 (which is what X runs on) instead of switching back to the virtual terminal I started x from.

1) ctrl+alt+Fn gives me black screen (mabe not totally black, but some kind of very dark grey...). ctrl+alt+F7 takes me back to X (looks normal).

2) ctrl+alt+BS shuts down X and gives me a black screen. I found out that if I typed startx and pushed ENTER X started up as normal (looks normal).

So it looks like I cant get the right resolution or display settings when goin from X to console....

Hi!

It comforts me a liittle bit that someone here has similar problem to mine with nVidia.

Perhaps one of the hints I got, could helpyou. But not to much hope: they did not help me :(

Hmmm, I had a look at your thread but I didn't get any further. Checked my Kernel, and System V PIC was already installed as suggested by someone.

After my emerge -u world I also had an upgrade to the Kernel from linux-2.4.19-gentoo-r9 to 10. Don't know if that can have done anything. Wouldn't think so but....

I have the same problem on my laptop with Rage Mobility 128 (r128 driver).
The problem occurs when using the CRT output (via Option "Display" "BIOS" or Option "Display" "CRT"). I have to Ctrl-Alt-Fn off that console and there's an error message on the console X was started from:

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

Doesn't seem to cause any problems other than being a pain in the ass to switch consoles. The server exits fine when using the laptop display.

Worked fine under XFree86 4.2.0 under redhat, perhaps it's a bug in 4.2.1?

I don't know if you ever got this resolved but I have had a similar experience where this was caused by a the framebuffer support in the kernel configuration. When I would shutdown X, all access to the console would be rather impossible since all I would get is a blinking cursor and no characters. And, NO, performing a setterm -reset did not fix that, the only way to get the terminal text back would be to reboot. So, all in all, the symptoms you are describing sound pretty much like an incompatibility with the kernel's framebuffer support and the video drivers you are using... My take on this.

Otherwise, if you have resolved this issue, please let me know! :P

Maybe it's your mainboard's APM function!

Some mainboards use CTRL-ATL-BackSpace for APM SHUTDOWN! Disable APM in grub apm=off or similar with lilo and try again.
