New to Gentoo

Post by Sphez » Wed Nov 11, 2009 4:18 pm

:D

Well i have been playing around with linux off and on for the past 5 years would like to make the permanent switch over to linux now since windows is FUBAR. I have wached gentoo grow over the past 2 years and from what I see I like it very much. On my laptop I currently run Slackware but on my Desktop I would like to run Gentoo. Now my desktop I built as a gaming rig with 8 gigs of ram nvidia 285 video card and crosshair 3 motherboard with a amd phenom x4 processor.

I am curious on how Gentoo would handle the video drivers and if it would support the motherboard drivers and such. One last thing is I would like to run VMware too on the system to test and play around with other distros but would like to keep gentoo as main OS.

Any thought from anyone?

:?: :?: :?:

You could start by booting your desktop rig from a linux live CD with a recent kernel, and pasting the output of "lspci -n" into http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/

This is the Debian Hardware Compatibility List. Don't worry that it's a Debian tool, it is the kernel that supports your hardware, not the userspace tools (i.e which Linux Distribution you choose to use) that matters.

Enjoy using and learning Gentoo. My recommendation would be to learn how to use the package manager (Portage) back-to-front, and inside-out (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/?catid=gentoo)

Installing nvidia drivers is as easy as:

emerge nvidia-drivers

This is a good site to bookmark: http://www.gentoo-portage.com/

You can install vmware through

emerge vmware-workstation

... or just run the vmware installer from vmware. Works great!

Virtualbox (virtualbox.org) is free and very nice also if you want to check that out.

Now I see the Gentoo DVD but is there still the minimal install or is it just the Giant DVD?

The DVD **can** be used to an install, but is overkill. The minimal isos are the quickest downloads and the supported method, but truth be told, just about any live cd or running *nix environment can be used to perform an install.

The minimal isos can be had from here (for x86_64):
http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo/ ... rrent-iso/

Follow the appropriate handbook from here:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/

I was just checking to make sure everything was going to work fine. Anything in particular I should compile into the kernal or run with the setup?

Here is my .config for gentoo-sources-2.6.30-r8 : http://omploader.org/vMnI3YQ

Nothing special actual, I use genkernel to build it. Since I wasn't too sure about which SATA controller, I just build the most common ones into the kernel.

Sweet this sounds like it is going to be a ton of fun to try and compile a kernel and install Gentoo.

first emoticon is a laugh, second emoticon is called 'twisted' = that means: 'it should be fun, in some funny twisted way'
I`m just recalling my first fight with the kernel
