[solved] libxcb problems (conflicting packages)

When I tried to do an emerge update I ran into some problems with libxcb. Stuff like

libxcb-xlib.so.0: cannot open shared object file

I found this, http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x ... -guide.xml and I'm trying to do part 3 but I keep getting a bunch of emerge errors.

I have a lot of use variables because it seems like everytime I go to install something emerge is telling me I need to add different use variables to make something work. I assume this is normal? (I remember back in like 2004 I'd have maybe 5 use variables top)

edit -- Is there a way to force install everything besides blocked packages? I only have one qt app so I don't really care right now if qt is broken but I'd like to be able to use my computer. Basically nothing works and I cant fix it because of all these conflicting packages.

The best recommended approach would be to enmerge all the blockers and then re-run your emerge again. Based on your output I believe you will only need to unmerge these:

emerge -C dev-python/PyQt4 x11-libs/qt-gui x11-libs/qt-phononqt x11-libs/qt3support

Portage will pull back in the necessary dependencies as needed when you perform your updates.

BTW - the USE flag additions are normal, but you don't need to apply them globally -- just add specific use flags to your /etc/portage/package.use for individual packages.

You need to add all qt modules to be updated. You could leave out qt-gui from your original command, and let qt-* be updated on your next world update. You do need to upgrade your Qt, as the version you have installed is vulnerable to a security bug.

I got everything sorted out. Had to remove a few extra packages besides qt to get everything to update. My main problem is that I didn't do a full update in over a year; it was always easier to update individual apps instead of the whole system. I finally got around to it though
