Gnome 2.26: Shutdown and reboot do not work

  • Quote

Post by danvari » Mon Oct 05, 2009 10:06 am

Hey!

I recently updated my gnome-light 2.24 to gnome-light 2.26.3. now reboot and shutdown via system do not work anymore (they did before!). shutdown only kills all applications and only my wallpaper is still alive. reboot kills all applications and boots into gdm (but thats all).

i do not have those problems on ubuntu/archlinux, so it might be a gentoo/my own issue. i searched the forum but did not find any other people with that problem :-\

I have been being bothered by a similar problem at the first time when I was using gentoo during the last year.

when I choose reboot/shutdown the machine through gnome-panel, I just got my X restarted

I tried countless possible solutions to it, but none of them worked.....

The history of this problem is almost as long as the history of gnome-2 T_T

for example check this out

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... /+bug/8238

I completely lost the hope to solve it. ....

I have opend a bug at

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=271023

and if you wish, you can surely reply that bug to tell them that in fact many people are still suffering from that problem :(
and in fact I wish you would, so maybe that could attract more attention....

gnome 2.26 : restart/halt doesn't work after first login

  • Quote

Post by magowiz » Sun Oct 11, 2009 9:18 am

Hi,
since I upgraded to gnome 2.26 , on first login the "restart computer" or "halt" makes the gnome session stop but it prompts to gdm and it doesn't reboot/halt the system.
If I login again and choose to restart/halt the system it works.

I have this problem as well. Does anyone have a fix for it? Interestingly though gnome-light 2.24 actually uses gnome-session 2.22, and not gnome-session 2.24 which is masked. So I wonder if shutdown and reboot do not work in gnome-session 2.24. I have also noticed that the gnome power manager stops working when it comes to powering the LCD screen off after a set time? I have posted on that as well here:

This is a know bug in gnome-session, the actual issue is its crashes and come back to gdm (for 2.26), we had the same problem in 2.28.
So we wrote a patch to fix this crash.
The second problem is a malicious timeout executed on some logout/reboot/shutdown (ending EXIT phase), so finally we've to wait 10s... but that's a random bug

After patched gnome-session again, its seems to work now, however that's for gnome-session-2.28.
  • * could you fetch the gnome overlay ? (someone who has a testing profile)
    * have a look at this upstream https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=598211, and please try the patch named "gnome-session-2.28.0-do-not-keep-zombie-clients.patch", and get back me about the delay on "EXIT" (each logout/reboot/shutdown)
thanks in advance

I think I have the exact same problem as John5788 ...
Have to shutdown using ALT+CTRL+F2 then using init 0
save me!

Hi

Is there a way to get the gnome shutdown/reboot working without pam/consolekit enabled?

I added consolekit to the default runlevel, and I still cannot reboot/shutdown via Gnome-Panel.

Yes, same problem here.
Somehow gdm wont stop, I think this should be the root of this problem. Ctrl+Alt+F1 -> /etc/init.d/xdm stop -> Some error: Couldn't stop gdm. (@work atm so cannot check...)

I've noticed that if I start "root terminal" at any time during my gnome-light session, shutdown and reboot from the gnome menu returns me to gdm.

If I avoid using "root terminal" during a session, the shutdown and reboot menu options work as expected.

Shutdown and reboot from the menu works also in these cases:
...I start a regular terminal session and su to root.
...I start other apps that require root credentials.

I still cannot shutdown/reboot from the icon on the GNOME Panel. I tried opening a terminal and su to root, that does nothing. Any other ideas?
