Xorg server 1.5.3 problem: no screens found

  • Quote

Post by muebi » Mon Aug 31, 2009 5:53 pm

Hi,

I have the problem that I cannot startx and the xorg-server gives the message:

(EE) No devices detected

Fatal server errors:
no screens found.

What does this really mean? I was using my xorg.conf successfully with versions of xorg-server < 1.5 but since I upgraded to the latest version I always run into this problem.
Any help is appreciated.

Here is the output from /var/log/Xorg.0.log

If:

Code: Select all

cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep -i evdev
does not produce
CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y
you need to add evdev support to the kernel

If:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/make.conf | grep -i evdev
does not produce
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
you need to edit make.conf to add evdev to INPUT_DEVICES="

If:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/make.conf | grep -i hal
does not produce
USE="hal"
you need to edit make.conf to add hal to USE="

Then run:

Code: Select all

emerge -uND dbus hal xorg-server xf86-input-evdev
rc-update add dbus default
rc-update add hald default
rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
reboot
To see if auto (no xorg.config) will get X started.

I did what you suggested but still not working... :-(
I have CONFIG_INPUT_EVDEV=y, INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse evdev" and USE="hal andalotofotherstuff".

The output of eselect kernel list is

Available kernel symlink targets:

ls /etc/hal/fdi/policy gives:

Hi,

After some googling I ended up adding the following line to one of my devices in xorg.conf:

BusID "PCI:0:2:0"

This helps to identify the graphics card (I have two).
After this small change startx works again. However, I am still not sure if everything is properly set-up now especially with respect the xorg-server > 1.5 version...
