KDE 4.3 is now unmasked for amd64

Since all packages were keyworded properly and bug 280312 doesn't affect amd64 architecture, we unmasked it for amd64. Thanks to the amd64 Arch Team for permitting us.
Also the Gentoo KDE Guide is properly updated with installation/upgrade steps, and upgrade troubleshooting tips.

It's very nice. I nuked my ~/.kde4 folder and started fresh. Lots of new eye candy in there. :D

Great! 8)

Also, which version is the kde team going to work on getting stable eventually? 4.2.4, 4.3.*, or to be determined?

A fresh sync and I still had to add

Code: Select all

~media-sound/phonon-4.4_pre20090520
~dev-libs/soprano-2.3.0
~app-office/akonadi-server-1.2.0
to /etc/portage/package.unmask.

I hope that too... I am getting tired of having to keyword all those packages on my "stable" Notebook.

I had rc3 already installed (on my unstable, testing desktop), and it looked much better than 4.2. And those missing packages (k3b, konversation - possibly a few more) slowly start to appear again.

just my .02$

PS. currently merging - 20 packages to go 8)

I am genuinely impressed. The update installed 116 packages and uninstalled quite a few on my system. Everything merged without the slightest glitch.

Nice work, KDE team, really well done !

Agreed....my upgrade was more complicated because I was moving from 4.2 slotted to 4.3, but, overall, very smooth. Terrific upgrade. Love the sets.

[UPDATE]Kudos on the docs too...very helpful[/UPDATE]

The Gentoo KDE Guide is appropriately adapted with installation/upgrade steps, and advancement troubleshooting tips.

Is it right that xorg-x11 is not dependency of kde4.3.0?

well, xorg-x11 was replace by some split packages... the core package being xorg-server.

So it does depend on X.

even though it looks nice and has some features I like very much, there are still some obvious bugs I, e.g. no superuser-button in the control center (in the login-section it is not possible to change anything) and the apply-button is still disabled when changing the theme in the control center. Found 2 bugs when using it for 5 minutes. I am wondering why nobody fixes these.

I would have to check about the apply button, but IIRC it worked quite well.

As for the missing admin button, you can always - with this release easily - run systemsettings as root.

But you are correct, that some part still need improvement.
BTW, noone forbids you to send in a patch, fixing those issues.

Actually, Veldrin, now that you bring the subject up ... can you please outline that easy method to run SystemSettings ? There is no such trivial method in my custom installation, which is basically a kdebase-meta with some extra packages. root is not allowed to log in and there is no GUI for running system settings as root.

I am very curious how I (the user) am expected to do this. The way I did was to find the name of the binary, then try to run the app from a root login. This is a non-trivial operation, since the term "System Settings" is not represented in the file system, so it can only be found by some kind of heuristics.

Gentoo could easily help this by adding a "System-wide settings" button to the System menu.

To run systemsettings as root, login to KDE as a normal user, then just type...

Code: Select all

kdesu systemsettings
...in Konsole. It will ask for the root password and then launch systemsettings for the root user, where you can then configure the login manager.

Can someone please gvie me a working link to the kde-4.3 sets? I tried http://git.overlays.gentoo.org/gitweb/? ... ree;f=sets but that's not working.

Or am I doing something completely wrong? I had kde 4.2.4 installed (originally with sets), thought I had upgraded everything to 4.3, but now am finding a lot of 4.2.4 stuff on my system. I didn't use sets to emerge the upgrade, so I'm guessing I need to.

P.S gkmac, enjoyed your sig.

It seems I've answered my own question. Got the sets snapshot now (link is working again), and looking at emerge output, emerging with the kde-4.3 sets seem like it will fix my problem. Looks like I need to use the specific versioned sets (@kdebase-4.3) rather than @kdebase.
