Kde 4.3 network plasmoid - Where to find it?

  • Quote

Post by daseinhorn » Wed Aug 05, 2009 3:04 am

I have upgraded today to KDE 4.3, and I was looking forward to try the new plasmoid widget for Network Manager. However, when I look at the list of widgets I can install / download or the source packages on Portage, the plasmoid is nowhere to be found. I would like to know what is the command to install it, and if there is any extra configuration I should do prior to use.

Thanks!

Don't you have kde-misc/knetworkmanager in your portage tree?

That package is for kde 3.5, he was asking for the NetworkManager plasmoid.
As far as I know, the only place where one can get the NetworkManager plasmoid is from the kde-testing overlay as kde-misc/networkmanager-applet ...

Code: Select all

lap25 networkmanager-applet # pwd
/usr/local/portage/layman/kde-testing/kde-misc/networkmanager-applet
lap25 networkmanager-applet # ls
Manifest metadata.xml networkmanager-applet-4.3.9999.ebuild networkmanager-applet-9999.ebuild
lap25 networkmanager-applet #
... but there does not seem to be a stable 4.3 plasmoid yet, I have been reading what little information about changes in 4.3 that I can find and I have not been able to find any proof that says a plasmoid for NetworkManager is ready for 4.3, it has however been hinted that they aimed for a 4.3 release of the plasmoid. I guess they missed the deadline ?

I should say that I have not upgraded to 4.3 yet and has not had time to look through it for a nm-plasmoid so it might still be there.

Cheers

As far as I can tell, there has still not yet been a stable release of the NetworkManager plasmoid. There's an ebuild available for pulling in a CVS copy, though:
http://gentoo-overlays.zugaina.org/kde- ... 999.ebuild

Note: I have not used this myself. I have, however, used the plasmoid under Kubuntu and was thoroughly unimpressed. It's certainly looks slick, but a lot of important functionality is completely missing. I've since moved to Gentoo on my laptop, and to be honest I'm much happer with the combination of netplug and wpa_supplication than I ever was with NetworkManager.

Also, here's a bonus tip that I just recently discovered: wpa_supplicant has a GUI admin interface that can be enabled with the qt4 (or qt3) USE flag. You can then run this from KDE to dynamically scan/configure/save access points, just as easily as NetworkManager (though the layout is not quite as intuitive). I had to run it with "kdesu wpa_gui" on my system; it couldn't see the wireless device when run directly as my unprivileged user.

Hope at least some of this is helpful. :-)

It was far easier for me to switch to wicd, which I discovered was a far superior application anyway. No more of networkmanager's tiresome bullshit.
