amd64, 32 bit sound

Hi,

I have tried running various games on my system, and am having sound issues. Alsa, music, etc works fine. However, running et (enemy territory,) sound is quite dysfunctional. In the compile it says this:

Code: Select all

 * If you are running an amd64 system and using ALSA, you must have
 * ALSA 32-bit emulation enabled in your kernel for this to function properly.
I checked menuconfig, and 32 bit alsa emulation is quite enabled (not module):

Code: Select all

-> Device Drivers -> Sound -> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture -> Emulation for 32-bit applications
Is there another module I need to enable, that i have missed?

Other games give errors too, tuxracer gives this error, supposedly because it wants 32 bit alsa:

Code: Select all

%%% tuxracer warning: FAILED to load music file music/start1-jt.it: Unrecognized music format
%%% tuxracer warning: FAILED to load music file music/options1-jt.it: Unrecognized music format
%%% tuxracer warning: FAILED to load music file music/race1-jt.it: Unrecognized music format
%%% tuxracer warning: FAILED to load music file music/wonrace1-jt.it: Unrecognized music format
and when running warcraft (cedega) it says it cannot initialize sound devices.

Thanks,

Have you tried:

Code: Select all

emerge app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs
:?:

I think that this will solve the problem....
The answer is inside you...
...and it is probably wrong!

i am having the exact same problem with tuxracer.
Has this issue is been resolved??

i don't see any 32bit emul entry's in the my alsa section. Not sure if i have set 32bit emul in anyother location of kernel config.

i am running the latest kernel on an amd64 box.
thanks

Why are you building your ALSA stuff into the kernel image instead of using modules?

Your Enemy Territory issue can probably be fixed with:

Code: Select all

echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
Think about your breathing.

Neither do I.

Hi, i'd the same problem with Tuxracer, but in this case the problem is with sdl-mixer libraries, I'd just downgrade it to 1.2.5-r1 and now i'm playing with it at full sound and music. The problem with 32bit sound i've no idea to resolve it.

Thank you so much for this information.

I'm going to be adding this to my systems config, for a bit. Not sure why the sound would have quit working.
What, me hurry?

For this problem, you need the mikmod use flag for sdl-mixer. Haven't checked, but I guess it was added in one of the version.

Awesome, thanks a lot.

Code: Select all

echo "et.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
This line of yours made my day . Have been having this problem for a while, now its fixed. Maybe this is something that could be integrated into the ebuild for enemy-territory?
