How to watch DVDs

Howdie,

I would like to watch a dvd that has presumable been encrypted with css. Now, I have the css useflag set in make.conf, I have emerged mplayer along with smplayer.
But upon trying to play the DVD, smplayer reports that mplayer crashed and gives the following log:

Yes, that is all. Not sure where the complaint about a joystick comes from, but that should not be the issue as the same shows up when I play a "free", non encrypted DVD, which works just dandy..

Any ideas?

Edit: Dragon Player does work just fine.. which I find very odd...and helps me nothing regarding step 2: Making a backup copy of the disc (I HATE scratches, my DVDplayer is a bit on the old side and doesn't like scratches either, and I am a messy person so I scratch discs easily )

Do you have libdvdcss installed? Mplayer never pulled it in for me, even with the css, dvd, dvdread, et cetera use flags set.

This might not be the best way to fix this but I use VLC use flags.....

dvd ffmpeg mpeg mad wxwindows aac dts a52 ogg flac theora
oggvorbis matroska freetype bidi xv svga gnutls stream vlm httpd cdda
vcd cdio live

I am running smplayer on my amd64 stable just fine.
You may need to run an ' emerge --sync && emerge -avuDN world ' after u change your use flags

How do you make applications use libdvdcss? Primarily I want xine and xdvdshrink to use that library.

Ok, no idea why, but everything works now. I did really nothing but give up, shut my PC down, and the next time I tried it worked.. oh well..

PS: I am using SMplayer now too, nice skin, works flawlessly.

... and if you need to play mounted ISO image (DVD)
mount:

mount -o loop disk1.iso /mnt/disk 

and then play this "dvd"

mplayer -dvd-device /mnt/disk dvd://1

You don't even need to mount it, just point mplayer at the image:

mplayer dvd://1 -dvd-device /path/to/disk.iso

Or simply open the iso file in smplayer.
