Weird error

After booting from the latest for the moment (20090702) AMD64 minimal build, I cannot connect, using wireless. The kernel correctly recognizes mi wifi adapter, then when I try to get address with dhcp:

Code: Select all

$ dhcpcd wlan0
wlan0: dhcpcd 4.0.13 starting
iwlagn: iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode firmware file req failed: Reason -2
iwlagn: Could not read microcode: -2
wlan0: read interface: No such file or directory
What's wrong?
iwlagn, iwlcore and mac80211 modules are loaded. The same modules are loaded when I boot from backtrack 4 beta 1 livecd and wifi works without any problems.

Did you install the microcode for your adapter?

emerge iwl5000-ucode

It is livecd environment, hence - read-only filesystem.

LiveCD should still be able to write to memory, no? If not, and the microcode doesn't exist in /lib/firmware, then it's a bug (or a feature request depending on how you look at it).

Hm, my mistake - I am able to write. Still, I am not sure if I can emerge the package. Mainly because I have no internet connection, since my wireless is not working :) What exactly is the module name?

Module is iwlagn. The module will load the firmware automatically once you emerge what I mentioned earlier. It will install the firmware files /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode or /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode depending on version.

Hm, I cannot use emerge in livecd, since portage is not installed: no such command :)
And apparently, firmware for iwl3945 and iwl4965 is included in the livecd, but not for iwl5000. Any other ideas? :D

Other than finding a net connection and downloading the firmware manually? No, I can't think of any alternative.
