Silent segfault in KDM on login

  • Quote

Post by Caper Diaboli » Fri Jul 10, 2009 7:50 pm

Hello,

I'm installing Gentoo on a Lenovo X61 Tablet. So far everything has been proceeding without a hitch, but right when it comes to starting X, I'm stumped. I've configured /etc/conf.d/xdm to use KDM for login.

It seems to start ok, the login screen appears but right after I enter the username/password, the screen blacks out and suddenly I'm back in console. There is nothing glaringly obvious in the Xorg.0.log or kdm.log that would point me in the right direction, however there is a curious line in /var/log/messages I can't figure out the cause.

Due to the sheer length of the Xorg.0.log I'm a bit reluctant to add it here.

You could try here - http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257339
But please read all comments there first to verify whether this is really the same issue.
Also try without kdm (use startx) as well. And verify whether it's not X11 driver issue as those are often the case as well.

Thanks for the pointer, however I doubt this is the case as I'm using kdm-3.5.10 (and KDE 3.5 in general, which I should have mentioned earlier but unfortunately didn't realize that at the moment). I will try if any of the comments in the bug could be applied to this.

Using startx everything seems to work as it should. There must be something strange with kdm itself, or as you mentioned, a X11 driver issue. I'll have to try fiddling with those a bit.

I'm still quite baffled with this, I still haven't managed to figure out the cause or any kind of solution to this. It does work normally sometimes, appears that when I reboot the computer and then run /etc/init.d/xdm start, and then proceed with the login it either works or doesn't. Whichever is the result, it keeps doing the same till I reboot again.

which sounds like driver issues.
