Annoyingly layman listed cell as an available overlay, but when I 'layman -a cell' it refused to install (so I ended up manually checking out the svn and copying it to the right place). Anyway, the kernel in there is sys-kernel/ps3-sources-2.6.24 along with a load of patches. In the main portage tree the most recent sources are sys-kernel/cell-sources-2.6.24-r1 but no patches.

Which sources are you using and are you simply copying the ebuild and patches from sys-kernel/ps3-sources-2.6.24 and renaming in a local overlay?
I don't think there will be anything of value in cell-sources. I believe they were abandoned because everything it did was merged into mainline. I made my own patchset from patches out of the Sony dev's kernel tree. Everything I picked out should be in 2.6.30, but I haven't checked yet.

Edit: Nevermind on the 2.6.30 patches. Looks like the majority are slated for 2.6.31. I'll rebase my patchset once I find the time.

How to strengthen my PS3 Network Signal without using a cable or buying a new stronger router?
How do I strengthen my PS3 Network Signal without using a cable or buying a stronger router? At the moment my network connection signal is around 1% to 17%. I was wondering how i could fix this so that I can surf the internet and play games online.

You can get new (bigger/longer or even directional) aerials for you're current router, can improve signal strength considerably. Most likely its walls and stuff that the signal has to pass through that is resulting in the low strength, so perhaps consider situating the router somewhere else if possible too.

The patches slated for 2.6.31 are primarily code tidying. There are a few performance patches for ps3vram though. Not very exciting overall.

I only ask because there seems to be only X framebuffer support, but it seems the Cell is fast enough to run emulators on it nevertheless. How's desktop performance - responsive, sluggish, especially when running at 1920x1080? Is video playback practical? This is just a guess, but mencoder doesn't use the SPEs yet, does it?
I am very interested as well to what Motoi-Sakuraba-Milfeuille has asked. If it works as a nice desktop replacement then I may consider buying one myself.

No, a PS3 is not a desktop replacement at this time. Nothing will support SPEs out of the box at this time. What most people show off is 2D perfomrance off the PPU. Some things can be set up to use the SPEs but they are tricky and prone to breaking.

There are some neat projects going on as part of GSoC, and Gallium3D, that will start using the SPEs, however.

Alright, thanks for the information. Is there a site I can check every once in a while to see what kind of updates there are for PS3 linux?

If there is, I don't know it. Libsdl's mailing list would be the place to watch for the GSoC changes. Ffmpeg too if they're still working on the multiprocessor support.

Cbe-oss-dev would is the kernel mailing list for the ps3 and other cell machines.
