kdmgreet signal 11 (SIGSEGV) at startup

  • Quote

Post by dr_Fell » Sat Apr 11, 2009 7:13 am

hello, I am having problem with my kdmgreet for some weeks. During system boot, when login screen should appear I am getting just a window with error message that begins with:
A fatal error occured. The application unknown (kdmgreed) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV)
then, after clicking on the button on the bottom of the window my gentoo is going to console, where I can login and start my kde with startx. I have nevest kde that is in portage tree, I did one or two upgrades during the time I have this error and this didn't change anything at all.

try rebuild kdelibs, base, and whatever package contains kdm_greet.

I just stumbled upon the same problem.

Post your output of:

Code: Select all

tail /var/log/kdm.log
On my laptop it seems to have something to do with an incompatible version of Qt, so currently upgrading Qt to 4.5.1 ;)

Hello - sorry, I didn't notice Your post. First of all - emerging whole new version of KDE didn't change anything. I was waiting for upgrade in order to check if this can solve my problem but no results, KDM is still crashing.

And here is my kdm.log:

Code: Select all

Forgot to post an update here; upgrading Qt fixed my KDMgreet-problem.

Looking at your kdm.log; pretty odd, no errormessage whatsoever :x

Perhaps you should try remerging Qt and every installed package related to it (to see which ones, execute: equery l qt) :)

Hello, equery l qt returns only 1 package...

Code: Select all

localhost michal # equery l qt
 * Searching for qt ...
 * installed packages:
[I--] [  ] x11-libs/qt-3.3.8b-r1 (3)

I also tried emerge -eDpv world | grep qt with this result:

Code: Select all

localhost michal # emerge -eDpv world | grep qt

Is this the complete list of the every package related to Qt or should I use equery in other way ?

EDIT: strange, using equery this way seems to work

Code: Select all

localhost michal # equery list *Qt*
 * Searching for *Qt* ...
 * installed packages:
[I--] [M~] dev-python/PyQt-3.17.4 (0)
[I--] [ ~] dev-python/PyQt4-4.4.4-r4 (0)
localhost michal # equery list *qt*
 * Searching for *qt* ...
 * installed packages:
[I--] [ ~] dev-libs/poppler-qt4-0.10.6 (0)
[I--] [ ~] media-gfx/qtpfsgui-1.9.3 (0)
[I--] [ ~] virtual/poppler-qt4-0.10.6 (0)
[I--] [  ] x11-libs/qt-3.3.8b-r1 (3)
[I--] [ ~] x11-libs/qt-core-4.5.1 (4)
[I--] [ ~] x11-libs/qt-dbus-4.5.1 (4)
[I--] [ ~] x11-libs/qt-gui-4.5.1 (4)
[I--] [ ~] x11-libs/qt-opengl-4.5.1 (4)
[I--] [ ~] x11-libs/qt-qt3support-4.5.1 (4)

[I--] [ ~] x11-libs/qt-webkit-4.5.1 (4)
[I--] [ ~] x11-libs/qt-xmlpatterns-4.5.1 (4)
but it is nothing about wildcards in the manual, moreover, example from the manual:

Code: Select all

equery list zilla - list all installed versions of packages containing the string 'zilla'
suggest that when I use "qt" I should got complete list of packages containing string "qt"

EDIT2:

Ok, I am doing this:

Code: Select all

localhost michal # emerge -pv PyQt PyQt4 poppler-qt4 qtpfsgui poppler-qt4 =x11-libs/qt-3.3.8b-r1 qt-core qt-dbus qt-gui qt-opengl qt-qt3support qt-script qt-sql qt-svg qt-test qt-webkit qt-xmlpatterns

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

Total: 16 packages (1 upgrade, 15 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 17,703 kB

EDIT3: re-emerged all packages from this list - no effect, still the same error message.

Hm, weird; while you have Qt 3.x installed on your system, all it's addons are 4.5.1...

Perhaps try to install Qt 4.5.1? :)

Also; is it KDE4 you're using? If that's the case then you definitely need to upgrade Qt to 4.5.x since KDE4 needs it. Normally, if you're upgrading KDE via portage, it should install Qt4 automatically, but one never knows of course.

Please disregard this post if you've never heard of

Code: Select all

*  app-i18n/uim
      Latest version available: 1.5.5
      Latest version installed: 1.5.5
      Size of files: 3,182 kB
      Homepage:      http://code.google.com/p/uim/
      Description: Simple, secure and flexible input method library
      License:       BSD GPL-2 LGPL-2.1
But just in case you do have uim-1.5.x installed, this may be your problem (was mine about a month ago): it's known to crash everything Qt4-related when it's compiled with support for both Qt3 and Qt4.

Try

Code: Select all

echo "app-i18n/uim -qt3" >> /etc/portage/package.use
emerge -1 uim
and KDM might be able to greet you again.
