My working combination is

2.6.29+KMS+xorg-1.6+xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1

You should really NOT use intelfb if you have KMS enabled

just my 2cc

After compiling the Intel driver as module, my terminal actually works, as well as kwin4 compositing.

gentoo-sources-2.6.29
xorg-server-1.6.0
mesa-7.4_rc1
xf86-video-intel-9999

I'll give it some opengl kickin' as soon as worldofpadman has finished.

i think he means you don´t need any specific intel framebuffer support, kms enables its own frambuffer interface that overrides anything else IIRC.

Check your logs once you have kms running and you should see something like :

Code: Select all

[ 12.601270] fb0: inteldrmfb frame buffer device
[ 12.601272] registered panic notifier
[ 12.601277] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 on minor 0
cheers

I have a question regarding KMS:

I have gentoo-sources-2.6.29, mesa-7.3-r1, libdrm-2.4.5, xorg-server-1.5.3-r5 and xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1 installed. (Intel 965GM/GE chipset on a compaq Laptop)

KDE4.2 works fine, but if I enable KMS, I get the following output:
Xorg.0.log wrote:(II) intel(0): Output VGA1 using monitor section Panel
(II) intel(0): Output VGA1 disconnected
(WW) intel(0): No outputs definitely connected, trying again...
(II) intel(0): Output VGA1 disconnected
(WW) intel(0): Unable to find initial modes
(==) intel(0): video overlay key set to 0x101fe
(**) intel(0): Will try to enable page flipping
(**) intel(0): Triple buffering enabled
(==) intel(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(EE) intel(0): No modes.
(II) UnloadModule: "intel"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
Why is that? Do I have to wait for xorg-server-1.6.x hitting the portage tree and mesa-7.4 becoming unmasked?

You might try upgrading a bit more :)

That's my xorg-1.5:

BTW I also have a slight problem with outputs. The first time X starts after boot it thinks that a TV is connected and chooses a smaller resolution for X (actually the panel is in the correct 1280x800 but X GDM and Gnome occupy only 1024x768 of that) and every next time time (within the same boot) it's fine.

I guess that we just have to wait for a real xrandr-1.3. In the meantime try installing the versions I have.

I can confirm that CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE is necessary for a working KMS. For me, KMS is working, including the framebuffer console decorations, using gentoo-sources-2.6.29.

X however is not working. I am using x11.stable.list from [bug=251832]bug #251832[/bug], but the intel driver seems just too buggy for my ancient i865G chipset. KMS or no KMS I have problems with the 2.6.3 version, but with an older kernel, at least it works more or less with the also ancient XAA acceleration method. Under KMS I can manage to start xinit, but I cannot see the mouse pointer. The mouse works though, because I can move it over to the xterm window in the upper left corner, activating it, type text and such. When I exit xinit however my system freezes, and I have to do a hardware reset. It happens with XAA and UXA too. Apart from this UXA has really ugly tiling issues too.

Can you suggest maybe some xorg.conf options that may help? Or I just have to wait for a better intel driver?

You seriously should check out the new intel driver (2.6.99.902 which I think in short would be 1.7_rc2). It brings massive speed boost and finally I can see models with textures in vdrift instead of just polygons (BTW the game sucks - the driving model).

You should run compiz with 'Indirect Rendering' option.

IT WORKED. I was just so dumb, to remove this line in compiz-manager a long time ago....

Just upgraded xf86-video-intel to 2.6.99.902 from x11. It's been stable for 5 minutes now (!) :D
Blanking now works, and also i've had an issue with full screened windows only taking about 3/4 of the screen, which could be fixed by moving the window a bit (can't really explain this). Anyway, this behavior is now gone aswell.

Full screened windows is problem, but workaround is: "Start X → kill X (ex: control-alt-backspace) → Start X" and now fullscreen windows work. Its problem with KMS, without KMS it work without restarting X.

with KMS, after suspend to ram half of the lines on the screen become brighter, as if gamma for them has changed.
what is causing the problem ?

I'd recommend mesa-7.4_rc2, X stability seems to have improved a lot with it.

EDIT: Yes, a huge improvement. 10 hours continuous X compositing (UXA) without problems. No xorg.conf too.

anyone here using DRI2 and having an issue with direct rendering?

xorg.0.log says direct rendering is enabled by means of DRI2, but glxinfo says i do not have direct rendering

compiz works fine, so i know i have 3d acceleration, but other apps that check for direct rendering are failing as a result of this

I still have the same stupid problem of swap space getting full but then I am on 2.6.28. Are you on 2.6.29? Mesa 7.4 here.

I have never experienced such a thing, but my involvement in Intel graphics hardware is only one week old and started with 2.6.29 and mesa-7.4_rc1 already.

Of course, server-1.60; KMS is enabled, I like my highres framebuffer :)
Haven't tried the latest xbacklight, though I doubt that that'll help. I read somewhere on a mailinglist, that this regression could be solved by additionaly building intelfb, but that would be weird. Not the biggest issues, since adjusting brightness does still work, but only in 8 steps, ergo not that granular as with xbacklight. So, the devs broke something which used to work...well, nothing against cleanups or better code, but it sucks anyway.

Hey people,

I've had some success with getting KMS working, but I've run into some annoying problems that no amount of googling is turning out useful results.
himpierre wrote:

You're lucky. X doesn't start at all with 2.6.29 on my eeepc. Someone was more successfull?
I don't know what model eeepc you got, but (as far as I can tell) KMS is working on my Eee 1000HE.

I'm using vanilla 2.6.29 + PHC patch + tuxonice kernel patch. Here's my .config: http://pastebin.com/pastebin.php?dl=m1ddb14bb I'm using xorg-x11 1.6.0 and using the 2.6.99.902 intel drivers.

The problems I'm running into really are more related to getting out of X then getting in. For example when I log out of my desktop session the screen goes blank like its restarting Xorg, and then just hangs there. The same thing just recently started happening when I shutdown or restart my netbook as well.

The other thing is that the console is gone. Literally just gone. When I do ctrl+alt+F[1-6] I just get the same black screen I get when logging out of my desktop session.

I can't imagine that KMS would prevent access to the console... or does it? Or does KMS require using a framebuffer driver when in console? Never much cared for framebuffer in console as it just made everything too small to read, so I never bothered selecting any FB drivers.

Any ideas?

Dominic

Same behaviour here now.
