or you could wait for it to become stable according to whoever the gnome package person is. That's what I'm personally doing, though I've already waited for this release for quite some time.

It's a constant battle between keeping my system in stable and wanting the latest packages. On an almost daily basis I give in and decide to upgrade to gnome 2.4 and then I do this:

Code: Select all

root@mybox red # ak emerge -Up gnome
>>> --upgradeonly implies --update... adding --update to options.

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

I have installed gnome 2.4 (and I only have gnome as ~x86) - on a P4-system you must use CFLAGS="-mcpu=pentium4 and not march for a few packages like gdm, gnome-media and a few others, but exept for that - it is rock stable!
Always make it as simple as possible, but no simpler

YOu type it right on the command line, same as any other emerge. It just has a couple of words in front of it.

What it does is "unmask" packages that are considered unstable so that portage will install it for you. Packages are masked so that you dont accidently start installing packages considered unstable unless you specifically want it too.

isn't it obvious? gnomes used to live in houses with arches in every doorway. i suppose they still would if they existed, but the arch foundation wiped them all out for not paying them copyright fees and such. that's what you get for using illegal arches. so anyways, gnomes had arched houses and they would decorate them with fabulous markings. usually they had something to do with elven folklore because that's what gnomes were into i guess. have you seen the lord of the rings? remember bilbo's hobbit hole? sort of like that, only not as clean.

ahem. arch and gnome have nothing to do with each other.

I used gentoo BEFORE it was cool.

When you do -Up you not only pull in the gnome upgrades, but also any upgrade (no matter how small) of all the packages that they depend on, and that they depend on, and so forth.

Perhaps try this instread

Code: Select all

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge -p gnome
It should be (somewhat) better.

You could also grab the packages at breakmygentoo, they have some cool patches that the portage gnome doesn't have, like an improved fileselector, drop-shadows on the menus etc....

I hadn't thought of that, so I eagerly tried it and:

Code: Select all

red@mybox red $ ak emerge -p gnome

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
