DVD burning issue

Post by R.I.P. » Mon Mar 09, 2009 8:27 pm

From some moment dvds I burn stopped mounting after they burnt.
I'm using gnomebaker 0.6.4 which as far as I understand uses cdrkit.

The burnt dvd cannot be mounted, in /var/log/messages there are messages like "attempt to access beyond end of device"
It also doesn't open on windows box, though it successfully played by DVD player device.
dvd+rw-mediainfo says that track is "complete, damaged" and strange thing there is:
"Track Size: 1x2kb"

Also if I generate iso image and try to burn it on windows box the result is the same.
So this is probably not HW problem.

Does anyone know how to fix that?

Hi R.I.P.,

Commercial DVD players are trained to be very "forgiving" - they often can play damaged or overburnt DVDs where normal computers fail. Depending on your actual needs your computers behaviour can be either bug or feature :)

Could it be that your movie is a bit oversized for that DVD? If so the fix would be to shrink the movie by some MB and remaster the DVD, I think.
Egal was Du kochst: Karl Marx.

it also happened on far-from-full DVDs with non video data with same symptoms.

Hmmm,

are you dual-booting? Or is that windows box really a different box?

If it's a different box where you can burn and read, and your gentoo box can't read that media then swapping the drives could give a clue. Otherwise - would you be willing to try with nautilus-cd-burner instead of gnomebaker and see if that works?

the win box is another box, with another dvd-writer. I don't have windows on my box.
I did two checks:
1. generate iso on gentoo box -> burn it on gentoo box -> not readable on both boxes
2. generate iso on gentoo box -> burn it on windows box -> not readable on both boxes.

hence I think that iso image is generated somehow wrong.
Though even while burning this iso results with not readable dvd, iso image itself could be mounted.

I'll try nautilus-cd-burner to see if it works.
