galeon won't work with gconf 2.

When I have gconf-2.4.0.1 merged. (the only gconf 2 that will merge for me), galeon won't run, I get:

Code: Select all

GConf Error: Failed to contact configuration server (a likely cause of this is that you have an existing configuration server (gconfd) running, but it isn't reachable from here - if you're logged in from two machines at once, you may need to enable TCP networking for ORBit)
I'm running galeon 1.2.11 and my USE flags are: usb mozsvg

Anyone know how I can make galeon 1.2 work with gconf 2? There are a bunch of packages which depend on it.

jefftang,

You need to build mozilla against gtk2, then you can emerge galeon 1.3.9, which is the latest version. You need to add gtk2 to your use flags. (Note the health warning in ufed)

It looks like you have upgraded to Gnome 2.4.
I found out the hard way that the upgrade breaks Galeon 1.2.11.

I tried galeon 1.3.9 for a while, but decided I liked 1.2 better. There's a whole bunch of stuff I can't set in the preferences anymore.

jefftang,

Yes, I've noticed that too. It looks like Gnome 2.4 is built with gtk2 so needs is apps built that way too.

I wonder if you can edit Galeons config file without using the GUI provided in the app?

I had the same problem and found a not-so-elegant work around. Just put gconfd-1 in Startup Programs. You can find that in Desktop Preferences > Advanced > Sessions.

It ain't pretty, but you can still use galeon-1.2.x that way.

You can just get rid of Galeon and emerge Epiphany, it is the new official browser for GNOME.

To emerge 1.3.9 I think you will have to give the full path at first. After that it should automatically update to the 1.3.x branch.

Code: Select all

emerge /usr/portage/net-www/galeon/galeon-1.3.9.ebuild
It won't build against mozilla-1.5 (I tried it) so you will need a mozilla-1.4.x version built with gtk2 until galeon-1.3.10 comes out.

Not all of us like or want Epiphany. IMHO, Galeon is still better.

You can force galeon onto moz-1.5 but keep in mind that this is not supported. I've had no problems with it yet.

Okay, I had tried setting the mozilla snapshot to 1.5, not 1.5b. Maybe I'll give it a shot, but maybe I'll just wait a bit.
