screensaver problems

I've been searching for days for an answer but i have come up empty handed

I recently installed gentoo and i only have 4 screensavers.

If i install more they don't show up when i run System>>Preferences>>Screensaver

my system has the current Nvidia drivers installed and i think my xorg.conf is set up correctly.

Any help would be appreciated.

What Desktop Enviornment are you using KDE or gnome or something else?

Have you installed
gnome-extra/gnome-screensaver
package.
Didi you enable the opengl use flag?

i have gnome-screensaver installed with opengl use flag yet still only 4 screensavers show up

the screensavers that show up are:
cosmos
picture folder
pop art squares
floating feet

I've emerge electricsheep screensaver and it didn't show up in that list.

I'm running compiz if that makes any difference as it replaces my gtk window decorator. could that have anything to do with it?

Try getting some other screensavers to check if its that particualar screensaver which is the problem.

i followed the directions on this link and am now able to see a giant list of screensavers installed but now i have another problem.

Every time i open the screensaver application and change the screensaver my screen randomly goes black and stays that way for anywhere from 5 seconds to over a minute long before returning to normal. Could this have something to do with any settings in my xorg.conf?

Can be, if you have composite enabled.
Try using it with DRI2 if you are using intel
