I'm looking for a blog or diary application. It doesn't have to have an ebuild as I'm happy to compile things from scratch. My girlfriend and I are renovating a property and want to keep a diary, with photos, of the work we are doing. So the requirements are: must allow multiple users and must allow photos. It would be nice if it used MySQL for data storage, but that isn't vital.

Can anyone recommend an application?

Zope in general and Plone have many features useful for blogging. Ebuilds are in the tree.

Just wanted to throw in an endorsement for Moveable Type. Very easy to configure and use, all of the perl modules it requires are in portage, and it has features that allow users to upload photos and will do thumbnail generation.

Start from scratch!

I did. A completely custom designed CGI[bash, of all languages]/XML/XSLT solution. And I know exactly how it works, which seems to be the most important part to me...

I wrote myself a custom package, in PHP with a MySQL backend. It works quite well.

For those of you interested in a fast but stable php/mysql blogging application, how about http://www.wordpress.org. It's open source (unlike movable type), based on another php blogging app called b2 and claims to produce xhtml compliant code. easy install, though still missing some extra features. but excellent for basic blogging.

I'd like to give a second recommendation for MoveableType. I'm using it on my personal site (linked below), along with two other users. Images are supported. It helps if you have ImageMagic (if i remember correctly) installed to do thumbnail generation for you.

MySQL support is also built in, provided you have a working mySQL installation.

Movable Type is as Open Source as any Perl application.

I use greymatter, it's also open source (Perl), but it's not quite as configurable as I'd like, so I'm thinking of changing to another one / writing my own too.

Another vote for Movable Type. I've also used pyblosxom. It's not too bad, but I've been much happier with MT. So much infact that I really think I will purchase the Pro version when it debuts.

A brief plug for my own app: phpBlog. It's written in PHP (obviously) and it stores data in a MySQL database. I haven't actually put up a webpage for it yet, but you can see it in action in the following places:

I'm replacing a server that hosts moveable type blogs with gentoo (it's running e-smith atm) and would really like to be able to keep everything "inside" portage.

The reason there cannot be a movable type ebuild is that it's free only for personal use. If you are using it for any semi-commercial use, I believe you don't have the right to use it. That's why commercial web hosting services don't offer movable type as part of the basic package; it would violate that clause.

That may not be an issue for many of you, but I don't want to be boxed in by that license. And there's no doubt that mt has the most mindshare.

Movable type isn't bad, but cgi scripts are not easy to configure and to lock down.

As I posted above, wordpress.org has a decent weblogging application and is php/mysql.

Sorry, this may be obvious.

MOvable type charges I think $150 for a commercial use license. Still not bad, but why bother if free alternatives are available?

MT attracts people with the free for personal use licence. Said people fall in love with it and become used to it. Said people move to a commercial arena. Said people want to get a blog for it. Said people go with what they know and like, for a relatively low cost of $150.

Anyone using blogger.com? I am using them and have been very pleased. How does blogger (now operated by google) compare to movabletype and the others? Right now I can login to my blogger account from any computer that is connected to the Internet and make changes since the actual program is run from their servers and the final product is uploaded to my ftp server. Is this possible using the other programs? (Assuming, my computer is not a server on 24/7).

pMachine. Movable Type. B2.
MT for easy configurability, but it's Perl - not my strong point - (the license issue, too) and some hosts (if you're doing the remote host thing) don't like the load it places on the machines.
b2 - very easy to customize. PHP
pMachine - PHP, a little more work to customize, but pretty feature-full.
I wrote my own PHP/MySQL blogging scripts. Only the features I wanted, none of the stuff I never used that the others had. Learned something by doing it, too.
