ATI driver 8.561 and xorg-server 1.53 and ABI versions

Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

ATI driver 8.561 and xorg-server 1.53 and ABI versions

When emerging the latest ati-drivers it pulls xorg-server v1.5 as a dependency. However, when running X with the ati driver it complains that the driver does not support ABI versions above 2.0, and that the version used by xorg-server is 4.1. Also my videocard is not recogniced (radeon hd 3450) and I get the error "no screens found". As I can tell the driver has not dropped support for the R600 chip but for R300 and below. However, PCI bus scanning has been replaced with libpciaccess in the recent xorg-server.
I upgraded the driver because of support for the newer kernel versions. With kernel 2.6.28 (gentoo-sources) I've resolved problems with my webcam, ALSA and some usb problems.

Has anyone else encountered the same problems when trying to upgrade kernel/ati-drivers/xorg? It seems stupid that the driver pulls a dependency not supporting the same versions of the ABI classes. Will I be able to compile a less recent ati driver with kernels above 2.6.24 without pulling xorg-server v1.5?

Thanks.

I've noticed that too. I have a radeon 9600 (RV350 I think) with two separate screens running. I noticed the driver complaints about xorg ABI. Also xine in fullscreen on screen 2 (640x480) was taking the screen res from screen 1 (1152x864) and thus only show the top left portion of a video, I fixed that by setting the xine video driver to xshm.

Yes one of the drivers a few back works fine, I can't remember which one, but mask the version that pulls in xorg 1.5, try again and repeat until xorg 1.5 is not required.

ati-drivers 5.542 does not require xorg > v1.3. However it does not compile against the 2.6.28 kernel generating a similar (but I am not sure) error as previous versions did. It does include a patch to make it compile against the 2.6.27 kernel but I need the 28 as it is the one resolving my hardware issues (removes 3 min booting time previously used on usb rel. errors!).

mrbig, does your xorg log contain the incompatible ABI versions error/warning? I thought that might be the reason for my trouble. If it is not I guess it could be libpciaccess not recognizing my PCIe card...
