Vlc gui?

Hi, i've emerged vlc with the following use flags but can't seem to find its gui. If i type vlc in the bash prompt i get nothing but a command line mode. How should i run vlc to use its gui? Thanks in advanced

vlc has multiple executables, depending on the gui framework you want to use.

vlc (guiless?)
gvlc (gtk)
qvlc (qt4)
nvlc (ncurses)

try one of them.
I think I had the same problem some time back, but it somehow solved itself - especially because vlc is my secondary player.

I saw it at the finall point of emerge but no one of them seems to work for me. When i run qvlc i get that (i think it goes into debug mode):

PD: Is very strange causei can play videos clicking on them but can't get vlc gui. What do i need to preview video files in konqueror?

Do you maybe have an old config back from wxGTK times?

Try moving/deleting ~/.config/vlc

I'm also having the same problem, though mine relies in a build failure when I do set the flag for the GUI..

Yeah, ran into this too. If you're using the 0.9* version of vlc, they no longer use wxwindows for the gui, they now use qt. So you need to enable the qt4 use flag for vlc to have a gui.

I've been encountering this problem now for several months with the 0.9X* and 1.X.X releases as well:

here some examples:

when emerging vlc-9999 (atm 1.1.0-git):

the solution which worked for some time in the past for me was to comment out the following line in the non-live and live-ebuilds:

after having edited the build of vlc 1.0.0 and emerged it, the gui appears but there are no dialogues and no functionality of the gui:

a new temporary solution for me seems to be to emerge it via:

USE="-skins" emerge vlc

then it works - there's no pretty support for skins / custom themes but that should be enough ...(at least it works now)

edit:

this isn't reproducible 100%

so you guys might need to re-emerge vlc a few times until the GUI shows up

this currently only applies to vlc-1.0.0 (vlc-9999 seems to be fully dependent on the skins-interface but also shows the above mentioned qt4-problem so currently a no go for me, if you've got more luck please don't hesitate to post instructions how to get it running ...)

Please unmerge vlc-0.9.x first before installing vlc-1.0.0
If you don't do that, some plugins will get linked against
the old vlc version and will not work.

not really a solution in every cases:

vlc 1.0-git > 1.0

or 1.0 > 1.1.0-git

they show the same erroneous behavior
