Works for me too, with async.

compcache working:

Code: Select all

cc zen-sources # cat /proc/swaps
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/dev/ramzswap0 partition 1006940 540 1
/dev/sdb2 partition 987988 0 -1

Someone says on zen-sources.org that with CONFIG_ASYNC it panics, but without it works for them. Since they didn't give me any sufficient information, and since it's a kconfig and you can disable it anyway. I'll just tag it async as experimental and release zen5 soon.

I've started getting random segfaults (of cp mainly it seems, unless I do not understand the log format) ever since 2.6.28-zen1. In particular, quite a few programs would fail to emerge (because cp was broken it seemed), but always at the same location (per program). This rendered the system less than usable, but now I've updated to -zen5 (or the beginnings of it) the issue seems to have become better. See below for what I mean:

Code: Select all

But now, no emerges seem to fail (just recompiled KDE 4.2 to RC1 and it seems to function fine). I wouldn't be worried if this was all, however after downloading a x86_64 nightly build of Firefox-3.1b3_pre, it segfaults on start, with the following message:

Using the "master" branch, commit 75e8d198759c682b92f7858c3cd0fcd91d591b17 as the source of the kernel, nvidia drivers 180.22, glibc 2.9_p20081201-r1

I could reboot into the 2.6.27-zen2 kernel I have and try exactly the same thing, if that helps (with the same driver version, et. cetera.)

No (when I did, more than half a year ago now, there were worser issues so I switched to), xfs. I must add I've enabled heap randomisation and disabled the compat VDSO (but I doubt cp itself has an overflow bug)

You sure that's a kernel problem?

I'd run linus for awhile and see if you can reproduce the same thing. It could be hardware failure (run memtest to find out), or something else local?

I have compiled last night with slqb and it seems to run fine but I have no way of determining if it is better the SLUB or not. For that matter I dont know what the difference is at all LOL.

FYI:

async did not work for me with 2.6.28-zen3, it now works fine using 2.6.28-zen5... since it was ata_piix having problems with it, i'll just include the lspci of that device:

Code: Select all

Can't boot normaly with 2.6.28-zen5 (with zen4 everything works fine).
At boot:

Code: Select all

mknod /dev/null: File exists
mount: / not mounted already or bad option
/etc/mtab is not updatable
then it fails to mount everything. This doesn't happens with zen4, so I think it's kernel.
Root on LVM. Async detection - on/off - doesn't matter.

2.6.28-zen5 works fine with async (4 S-ATA drives),
after the first boot it had problems shutting down but now it seems to be fine

Anyone expecting an error free update to 2.6.29 is wrong ;) Give awhile for us to fix the errors.

the async api in 2.6.29* excludes stuff, so it includes the API but doesn't implement it to everything.

git is building with allyesconfig now

In reference to the strange segfaults of applications in coreutils (mainly), I have had no luck with .28, and have instead gone back to .27-zen4. It is strange however, because having tried 2.6.27 (vanilla I think) and 2.6.27-zen4 they both work (i.e. no segfaults of 'cp' or others that I've seen so far) while the likes of 2.6.28-zen2, 2.6.28-zen5 and 2.6.28-gentoo (the latter configured from the defaults for -gentoo, i.e. from scratch) both exhibit the error. This leads me to suspect that a regression of some sort might have been introduced in .28 and that it's not zen-sources being at fault here. I've now had enough experimenting with it, will have to wait until .29 gets to -rc5 at least before trying to upgrade. If anyone wants the config files for the various versions that I tested, I would be more than happy to provide them. :)

you should use 'git bisect' to track down the commit that broke your machine and then post on LKML (instead of reverting to .27 and hoping that someone will magically fix this issue)
