strange problem with openarena

A few weeks ago, openarena works well on my Nocona 64bit system. When I started it today, it launches, i can go into the setup, choose a level and click on "play".

When the game starts, I hear the sound when shooting but the screen doesn't change at all, so i see the setup menu even the games seems to run (according to the sound I can hear)

I assume that some recent libary updates brokes the game (rebuilding did not fix the issue). Maybe openal or sdl or something. Has anyone made the same experience or does know a solution perhaps?

I have exactly the same problems on two different gentoo systems and would also be happy if someone knew a solution.

Same problem here in 2 machines i686 and amd64.
the i686 has an nvidia and the amd64 has an intel 945
games-fps/openarena-0.8.1
