I have my desktop, which runs usual desktop stuff.

I also have a server running apache2 (with mod_php & mysql; for b2evolution), openssl, ssh, qmail (and vpopmail, qmailadmin, ezmlm, etc), djbdns, and pure-ftpd. All of it runs on a PII 350Mhz. Hopefully I'll be getting something a little faster soon :)

I've got 2 desktop machines and 1 server.

THe server is running Apache2 with mod_php and Openssh. It also acts as a file-server and shares the portage tree with my desktop machines so I've only have to emerge sync once :)

desktop + laptop + server(print/file/divx player) + server (web+ftp+samba+soontobemail)

however im working on building a 4U server with 4 120GB drives to be colocated and running quite a few websites... so yeah, gentoo makes this much easier to work with

Both in my case.

My server runs the usual stuff, apache2/mod_php and mysql
also use it as a terminal server for my laptop. (old P75)

runs as a file server for my home machines to store "my documents" in /home/user
Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it.

Two boxes...1 desktop (my happy lappie) and 1 Server (an old P3-450 w/1GB RAM)

- laptop that runs a webserver and mysql for web development use. Lots of eyecandy to show off my windows friends (hey...I like eye candy stuffs)...Kahakai/3ddesktop/Eterm/gkrellm(transparent theme of course)/xmms/etc...

- server that runs samba (for those windows clients in the house)/ Apache/ MySQL/ CUPS/ OpenSSH/ Webmin/ TightVNC/ pure-ftpd/ Shorewall (Personal firewalls are a good thing...)/ Working on getting lstp on there togive my windows clients a chance to try it out w/o totally switching.

I have Gentoo running on a desktop, notebook, and router (VIA EPIA). The router also runs cups and samba for printing/file storage. I couldn't be happier :)

Well, my gentoo box is as close to a 'real' server as you can get running behind a cablemodem, but this box is also my primary desktop as well.

samba, Webserver, mysql, ftp, ssh.. think that's it. Oh, I also run the IceS2 source from my gentoo box as well. I run the ssh server more so I can connect to my gentoo box from other machines on my lan (like my Windows comp) rather than handing out accounts to people.

Lets see.... I have one "desktop-replacement" laptop that I use for mostly normal b.s. , then I have a sony picturebook that I take with me to class and such , one router/gateway/firewall computer , and finally a web/mail/file server. I love gentoo!

Currently, I run it on my desktop (my desktop being my only complete computer...).

However, as soon as I get enough money for a harddisk for my server, I'll install Gentoo on it...

Er, define "server". I run apache, courier-imap, ssh, mysql, etc. on this computer, but I'm the only one who uses them, and with few exceptions I only use them from this computer, so I doubt you could call it a server, even though technically it is one.

Wow, so many people use it as a desktop...
Whats linux like as a desktop?

I'm sorry this could be offensive, but I'm from a Windows Background, and well I have winXP Pro as my desktop, never thought about using linux as desktop, can it still do what I do in windows?

I like OfficeXP.... Thats the most important part and hrm, PC games I guess..
But I really like my gentoo server tho, run beautifully for almost a 2 years now... and has no major problems.....
I must admit, linux do make great servers!! :)

I guess it depends on what you want to do in Windows. :)

I can tell you what I typically use on my notebook desktop environment at work:

Environment: KDE
email: KMail
Office suite: OpenOffice.org
web browsing: Konqueror and/or Phoenix, depending on web page compatibility and my need for tabs.
listening to MP3's: XMMS
browsing the network at work (which is Windows based): LinNeighborhood
image editing: Gimp

For games, if there is not a linux version of your favorite game, you can always dual boot into Windows. For me, my favorite mp3 tag editor only comes in a Windows version, and none of the Linux equvalents has the same level of functionality, so I keep Windows around for that. Don't play that many games myself.
