Do you have the "dri" USE flag? Did you enable DRI support in your kernel?

I have the dri USE flag On. This is what I got on my kernel

CONFIG_DRM=m
# CONFIG_DRM_TDFX is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m
# CONFIG_DRM_MGA is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_VIA is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_SAVAGE is not set

Do I need anything else?

Thanks

you mention driver ati
how about changing that to radeon ?
your chip family might help .. if it's anywhere above or equal to r5XX family
i suggest you take a look at radeonhd.

If one don't work : try another is my motto.

Good day
There's this once i thought i had made a mistake .. but i was wrong :|

What does your kernel say about the initialization of the drm module?

Please post the output of "dmesg | grep drm" and your /Var/log/Xorg.0.log

Did you use the ~x86 version of x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati ? 6.10.0 is newest.

Hello Friend:

This is what my kernel says about the load of drm module :

Code: Select all

Feb 4 09:42:17 machine Linux agpgart interface v0.102 (c) Dave Jones
Feb  4 09:42:17 machine [drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
This is the output

Code: Select all

machine ~ # dmesg |grep -i drm
[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810

This is the most important stuff from Xorg.0.log

Code: Select all

abacinate Desktop # cat Xorg.0.log |egrep -i 'error|warn|fatal|not'
It is not supported in any way.
        (++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
        (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module dri
(EE) Failed to load module "dri" (module does not exist, 0)
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module glx
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
(II) RADEON(0): Cannot get VRAM scratch space. Allocating in main memory instead
Not using RMX
(WW) RADEON(0): Option "TexturedXrender" is not used
(WW) RADEON(0): Option "ModelName" is not used
(WW) RADEON(0): Option "ReducedBlanking" is not used
I can upload the whole log if necessary.

I will take a look to the newest version of the driver and see what happens!!!
Thanks for ur help friend!

The whole log would be interesting - especially why the modules DRI and GLX do not exist! If Xorg can't find these modules for some reason then it doesn't make much of a difference if the kernel drm module works or not.

Are you sure you do have VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" or (VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev radeonhd") set in your /etc/make.conf and compiled xorg + mesa with the DRI useflag?

In any case your card has an RV515 chip (see http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATI-Mobili ... n-X1-Serie) which is supported in both opensource drivers. But not sure if DRI is working in both master branches...

If DRI is working you should get an dmesg output like alex.blackbit in this thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-73 ... ight-.html

Hello schwarzygesetzlos

THis is my make.conf file:

Code: Select all

machine ~ # cat  /etc/make.conf
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example

I have compiled Xorg and mesa with the DRI flag enabled as you see:

Code: Select all

Code: Select all

#CONFIG_AGP_INTEL is not set
The video card may be an ati but your mainboard chipset is not ;)

Also may be very helpful to include the agpgart main code in the kernel image and not as a module.

Code: Select all

CONFIG_AGP=y

So, These are the new kernel settings:

# CONFIG_SONYPI is not set
CONFIG_AGP=y
# CONFIG_AGP_ALI is not set
CONFIG_AGP_ATI=y
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD is not set

# CONFIG_AGP_NVIDIA is not set

# CONFIG_AGP_EFFICEON is not set
CONFIG_DRM=y
# CONFIG_DRM_TDFX is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=y

Is that right?

@lordkur: You have an interesting state of your gentoo-system ;) gentoo-sources-2.6.21 are pretty outdated and x11-base/xorg-server-1.4.0.90-r3 is neither a stable nor a current release. I suggest you upgrade to latest stable 2.6.27 sources and xorg-7.4. By doing this there's a good chance to get your card running properly without using experimental git-sources.

Concerning acceleration & ati there are improvements over gentoo-stable xorg-7.2:
http://www.x.org/wiki/Releases/7.4

Your xorg-log says:

Code: Select all

(==) RADEON(0): Backing store disabled
(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled
(II) RADEON(0): XAA Render acceleration unsupported on Radeon 9500/9700 and newer. Please use EXA instead.
(II) RADEON(0): Render acceleration disabled
Seems you have to use EXA to get the kind of acceleration you want. To do this add Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" to your xorg.con in the "Device" Section. Should look something like this:

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
	Identifier "Card0"
	Driver     "radeon"
#	Option     "NoAccel" "false"
	Option     "AccelMethod" "EXA"
EndSection
But if I were you I would emerge a more sane xorg-server first ;)

I know my system is outdated due to lack of time :oops: I will update the system and try out. And see what happens,

You added your user to the "video" group?
Just feel the code...

Hello:

Now I solve it. The users were in the right group however I have enabled the kde desktop effects, thats was causing the issue.

I'm using a similar setup but X will only start correctly as root

As a normal user X takes a *very* long time to get going and radeon_drv.so is taking up a large amount of cpu from oprofile

From the xorg.log

Code: Select all

(II) RADEON(0): I2C device "DVI-1:ddc2" registered at address 0xA0.
(II) RADEON(0): I2C device "DVI-1:ddc2" removed.
(II) RADEON(0): Output: DVI-1, Detected Monitor Type: 0
Dac detection success
Unhandled monitor type 0
Is repeated a few thousand times if I let it sit there for about 10 minutes.

Any ideas about this one?
