fresh gentoo install. cant emerge gnome

Post by bigfam » Tue Jan 13, 2009 6:39 pm

Hi all, I did a fresh install of gentoo this morning.

I just installed xorg without problems.
when I try to emerge gnome I get the following
#emerge gnome -va

im compiling using these useflags and it working so far

so I guess I need a sane useflags to use?

Will I need to recompile gnome after with hal and avahi

That all depends on what you want of course, what you should be considering besides the actual flags you want is how many apps are affected by each flag in question. If only a couple apps you have installed have a flag, you should specify it on a per-package basis to keep your global list tidy. The same goes for cases where many apps may have a flag, but you specifically only want a couple apps to use it, or you only care about those few apps using it and it doesn't matter to you if the rest do. When I do a fresh install I tend to add only a few flags to the global and a few specific app flags I need before I do any system/world rebuilding or upgrading, and I'm comfortable with having another layer of app rebuilds to do when I later enable/disable flags of lesser importance.

Your system already has a set of what the Gentoo-dev's consider to be sane USE-flags - it inherits them based on the system's 'profile'. You can see what your profile is set to in a couple of ways; One is :-

Code: Select all

ls -l /etc/make.profile
...The other is :-

Code: Select all

emerge --info
...In the 2nd one, your profile will be displayed on the very first line, after the portage-version. You will also see every USE-flag that's currently enabled under that profile. Profiles can be changed, but more on that later, if you wish it...

With regard to blocked emerges, a useful switch to use with 'emerge' is the '-t' or '--tree' switch. This displays packages so that dependencies are 'indented' below the packages that depend on them. With that, not only would you be able to see that disabling the 'qt3' USE-flag would probably remove the 1st block in your list, it would also make it easier for other forum-members to help diagnose problems that you ask for help about.

My personal habit of long-standing is to do "emerge <package> -ptv" before any proper emerge so as to fine-tune the USE-flags to get ONLY those packages that i absolutely require ('-ptv' means 'pretend', don't emerge anything yet, 'tree-view' of dependencies, 'verbose' list of USE-flags and download sizes for each package).

Post back with the output of "emerge --info" and "emerge gnome -ptv" and we'll see what else we can suggest... :D

Here's my USE flags for my laptop running Gnome:

USE="-* tordns xvid ffmpeg a52 win32codecs mpeg firefox cairo gdbm python aspell acpi pcre pdf ppds mp3 mad opengl cdparanoia midi dbus alsa dvd css wifi pcmcia nls unicode ncurses mmx sse xcb xorg gnome gtk spell X ssl foomaticdb msn mp3 jpeg gif pnf tiff svg pam fam hal sdl dri cups samba threads expat glitz bzip2 zlib zip x86 usb java png truetype"

I prefer setting my use flags by disabling everything, then I know exactly what I do and don't want. However I down have a clue what some of these flags do (sdl, xcb, threads, expat, glitz).

Feel free to copy.

I think I had the same problem when I was installing like a month ago. You just have to go through the packages listed below, look at the use flags and try disabling them one by one. (You will be able to guess which flags cause dependencies)
I disabled them in /etc/portage/package.use, and then just re-emerge when you are done with the flags you need enabled.

Try adding "-cups" to your make.conf. I just ran into a whack of circular dependencies trying to emerge gnome, and that did the trick... of course, you'll have to emerge cups and any dependent packages again once gnome is emerged.

Good luck.
