Compiz missing composite extension

  • Quote

Post by kineticbeing » Sun Jan 04, 2009 12:21 am

Code: Select all

 $ compiz --replace
compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension
That's what I get when I try "compiz --replace" (and the command with extra options outlined in the Compiz Gentoo Guide, so that's not the problem).

I'm using the ati-driver's newest version (in ~x86) (fglrx), the newest version of xorg (1.5.3 I think, whatever is newest in ~x86)...I have opengl enabled, and the dri is working...

I'm stumpted on what I need to do to get Compiz working...

(I emerged compiz-fusion, compiz, and compiz-fusion-plugins-main, if that makes a difference)

Thanks in advance,

Do you have the Composite extension enabled in your xorg.conf? AIGLX? Check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what it says about composite and AIGLX.

check that:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Code: Select all

...
Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection
...
This is compositing, compiz needs it in order to run.

Also, if you had this problem you may have another that i had, that is GLX did not load. When logged into a window manager, open a terminal and type:

Code: Select all

glxinfo | grep direct
You should see "direct rendering: yes"

If you dont have glxinfo command, "emerge mesa-progs".

If this does not work, check that the glx module is loading in xorg.conf (and that "dri" is not). If it is loading, and your using nvidia, type:

Code: Select all

eselect set opengl nvidia
That should fix everything nicely :)

Also, if your using compiz-fusion, dont type "compiz --replace", try "compiz-manager". Make sure you have a decorater emerged, i use "emerald" for that. Compiz-manager sholud start emerald and replace the existing WM.

Enjoy!
