Hey folks!
sorry for not updating much, but I had no time :D
so, yesterday night I went and compiled the kernel, it's working (atleast it booted).
System seems to be fairly stable too, there is just one more problem I run into.

today when I woke up I looked at the system, to see a kernel-panic. restarted the system, directly went to systemrescueCD, and did a fsck.reiser4 on all partitions, most went through fine, but one got a bad superblock. tried fsck.reiser4 --build-sb, but it is asking about something called "[key_large]", anyone got any idea what this might be? cause I couldn't find anything googling.

Anyway, it's the /var partition. So if someone can tell me what these key is, and where to get, it would be very nice. If not, any idea on how to save the data? Or anything like that?

Thanks in advance

----------------------------------------------

Ok, did I new install, tried to format the partition again...ehh just too many problems there :D
Also I had the chance to do some additional optimization :D

Did you ever get this figured out?

I followed all the instructions as per stage3 install with reiser4 but whenever I try to boot it with grub, it shows a kernel panic about not being able to mount root on /dev/sda3 (or (hd0,2)).

One thing to note is I'm installing it in VMware, but I don't think that would make a difference, would it?

if you guys can't get it to run with the official reiser4-patch from kernel.org, try out latest zen-sources if that fixes it

Yeah the box is up and running. I am going to make a wiki entry for this anyway. But just a question, did you configure the kernel by hand?
If yes, make sure your device drivers are ok, and "sata" don't use ATAPI. Atleast this is what helped me. Also, check the kernel-hacking, for "use 4 Kb stacks", this must be disabled, and look in Cryptographic API for "deflate" and the compression you are using "gzip" or "lzo".

Hope it helps.

I'm gonna post when the wiki entry is done. Hopefully tommorow.

Good Luck!

PS: IMPORTANT: There was an post a few posts up, for another patch. You have to use both (atleast this is what I did).

:) Need a little spell check in there? *grin*

If you need a compression section, I'm using R4 w/gzip on all of my systems, even on my K6's.

As for the SystemRescueCD, good choice. This is my more preferred method of installing Gentoo on a R4 Filesystem.

As for the spell check, Sure Mate! :D
Also Simba7, thanks for all your support, the system is working perfectly now.
I am writting this guide to help people set it up, and there is going to be an compression section. Actually there is going to be a section for every plugin I found.
Hope to get it done by new-year, as a symbol for a new era. :D

Hi NetHawl,

nice wiki entry :)
in the following thread you'll find more info concerning reiser4 and/or reiserFS:
ReiserFS tuning thread, the mother of all "ricer" threads ;)
