ati-drivers not installing, can't startx

The ati-drivers package won't install, and gives me this error when I try to emerge ati-drivers:

Code: Select all

And when I try "startx" it gives me an error about the driver (fglrx) not being found.

I have an ATI Radeon x300se 256MB, if that makes a difference...

Any help is greatly appreciated, I've looked all over and can't find the anwser...I really want to get X working...

Thanks,

Kineticbeing.

I don't have much experience with fglrx, but your card is also supported by x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati if you want something different to try.

This driver can be selected by VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" in your /etc/make.conf

ps. Welcome to the Gentoo Forums.

Hi, can you post your emerge --info plz ?

Also, you should use the ati-drivers 8.54.

To do so, just run this :

Code: Select all

# echo "=x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.542" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
# emerge -av ati-drivers

The snippet you posted doesn't contain the actual error message. Could you post a few more lines above the "make: *** [kmod_build] Error 2"?

Im sure that the 8.50 ati-drivers doesn't compile with the kernel 2.6.26.

Okay, the newer version of the ati-drivers installed, and now when I try to startx, I get this message:

Code: Select all

(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
and the whole .log if you need it:

I only have one video card, but my computer says theres a card in PCI:1:0:0 and PCI:1:0:1, and X is looking for both of them for some reason, when I comment out the second one I get errors about both of them not being there, but when they're both in the xorg.conf I get an error about the first one not being there...

Ok, you /etc/X11/xorg.conf is mess up.

You need to run this :

Code: Select all

# /opt/ati/bin/aticonfig –initial –input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf
And post your new file plz.

Code: Select all

matt-desktop / # /opt/ati/bin/aticonfig –initial –input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf
bash: /opt/ati/bin/aticonfig: No such file or directory
matt-desktop / # aticonfig -initial -input=/etc/X11/xorg.conf
bash: aticonfig: command not found
I even tried re-emerging the ati-drivers.

I tried aticonfig before, it worked, but all it changed was Driver to "fglrx"

Can you tell me whats wrong with the xorg.conf? It seems (to me at least) to follow the rules in the manpages and the xorg.conf.example...But I've never done this before...

edit: It even says to use aticonfig in the "messages for package" output in portage, but doesn't work...

   Option "XkbModel" "microsoft"
   Option "XkbLayout" "us"
   Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
   Identifier "Mouse"
   Driver "mouse"
   Option "Protocol" "Auto"
   Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "ATIRadeon"
   Driver "fglrx"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen"
    Device "ATIRadeon"
    DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "MainLayout"
   Screen "Screen"
   InputDevice "Mouse" "CorePointer"

Thanks, that worked. I had to tweak it a bit more, but it starts X and boots into an openbox enviroment.

But the problem is that it does not register mouse movement. I can use the right and left clicks, and the openbox menu comes up, but it doesn't register the mouse moving around...

I changed /dev/mouse to /dev/input/mice (/dev/input/mouse0 got me into the openbox, but didn't register the clicks)...

I have just about no idea what to do here...

Maybe the mouse driver is messed up? Is there an alternative, or am I doing something wrong? Is the /dev/input/mice path the wrong one? (there's no /dev/mouse or anything like that)

Thanks for all your help though man, I've been trying to get X up for 5 days now...

edit:

I fixed it by commenting out the option device line, and now I got into a working enviroment.

Thank you again, especially for the fixed xorg.conf...
