Good to know I'm not the only one then, these both sound exactly the same as my problem...

It appears that intel is currently integrating changes to the mainline kernel to use the new GEM memory manager (developed by intel). It replaces TMM.

The 2.5.x drivers are in a state of flux until everything gets in mainline. 2.6.29 should have it. 2.6.28 already has most of GEM in it.

You can get the sources from intel and compile yourself.

Or just hold off on updating until GEM is finished. Hopefully then performance will be better. But so far XAA acceleration with older intel drivers is the best.

I'd be happy as a pig in mud if they'd just fix whatever it is that keeps screwing with my ability to watch DVD's on this machine! I could care less about gaming. I just want to be able to not have to switch to XP just to be able to watch a bit of mindlessness. Is that so much to ask?

Blessed be!
Pappy

I just tried using a 2.6.28 zen-source kernel, and it does indeed have some GEM support built into it. I built the kernel modules for drm and i830+i915. And compiled using git intel drivers.

DRI doesn't work. GEM fails when trying to allocate memory. At least in this zen-source. And the 2.5.1 driver in portage is really bad and flickers using compiz on my 855gm chipset.

I've gone back to xfwm4 with its cpu driven shadows and transparency. It's actually faster than intel's driver at the moment.

I did get the newest libdrm, but not mesa. I'll try compiling that.

My glxgears is showing 550-650 fps.
following the info from the Gentoo Wiki (cached at http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:Ws ... /Intel_GMA), my intel video gets 1599 fps in glxgears. I used to see your low numbers in prior testing. Roll-my-own 2.6.25.20 kernel is the only other difference that might matter.
Being a Gentoo user means living in a house inhabited by a family of crazed carpenters. When you wake up, the house is different. Maybe there is a new turret, or some walls have moved, or perhaps someone has removed the floor under your bed.

I don't get what are you referring to ? The link just mentions INTEL_BATCH variable, setting which to 1 makes no difference for me.
