Reiser4 Gentoo-sources not syncing

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

Reiser4 Gentoo-sources not syncing

  • Quote

Post by NetHawl » Tue Dec 09, 2008 3:33 am

Hey folks!

I'm working on a test box here, and wanted to use reiser4 for the FS.
Did a stage1 install without any problem, then merged gentoo-sources 2.6.27-r4, patched that with the patch from: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ ... 4-for-2.6/
I have reiser4progs merged, but upon boot the kernel panics.
Anyone got any idea?

Summing up:
Motherboard: ASUS A7V8X
CPU: AMD Athlon xp+ 2100
RAM: Kingston 256MB
DISK: Maxtor 40GB

INSTALL: Gentoo stage1.
KERNEL: gentoo-sources 2.6.27-r4, patched with reiser4 patch from: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ ... 4-for-2.6/
_CONFIG:
|
--> reiser4 [*], prompt for developement... [*], deflat [*]
|
---> Tried with ATA drivers, and SATA drivers.....

DIE_MESSAGE: VFS: Cannot open root device "802" (or "302" with ATA) unknown-block(8,2) <or (3,2) with ATA>
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
...sda driver: sd (or hda : disk with ATA)
Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,2)

anythign else I should post?

So, does anyone have some idea wha to do?

Please post your boot config here. I'm having no problems with mine.

..btw.. How did you build your Gentoo test box? I used SystemRescueCD on all of mine.

^------Since I really can't get any dmesg from the system trying to boot, I posted a dmesg from the liveCD I am using. the liveCD is found here:http://faskatech.net/

Can someone also post me their complete kernel config....maybe I missed there something.

nope, not really....Stage 1 is officially not supported anymore, it's still there, and actually it is just as fresh as it can be, since you compile the whole system...and if you do an emerge --sync before that... :D

Also, I tried to mount /boot as root now, and it breaks in the same way...assuming that I messed up the device driver section.

If sda2 is your boot partition, then the problem might lie in the kernel configuration. Also you might want to check that sda2 is the same (and not f.ex. sdb2) with the new kernel.

I would go with an extra /boot partition. Unlike GRUB LiLo should be able to boot from reiser4, but...

I can only second that !

don't mess with an patched (too big) grub

I haven't used lilo in a long time with reiser4 but like gimpel said it should be able to launch reiser4, grub resides in an reiserfs partition for me an works fine with reiser4 on / (root) - on an separate partition

*MINE WORKS FINE* .. But I am using Grub.. Why are you using LILO again?

I built my install using SystemRescueCD with Reiser4 Support. I just did this on 3 other boxes and they work perfectly. You do not need to modify grub at all.

..were did you get the ebuild for reiser4-gentoo-sources? I have the latest here if you need it.

Plus.. I don't see this in your log:

Code: Select all

[ 17.699285] reiser4: sda3: found disk format 4.0.0.
[ 18.400049] VFS: Mounted root (reiser4 filesystem) readonly.

Hmm, ok...seems that I found the problem...
the install CD I used had some outdated reiser4 tools + I did the patch myslelf...
so I just ended with a corrupt filesystem... damn that is crazy....
but anyway...I downloaded the SysstemRescueCD and am going to do a new install, can you do me a favour and give me a link to the most recent ebuild for reiser4-gentoo-sources?

Sure.. I'll just post mine..

Stick this into /usr/portage/sys-kernel/reiser4-gentoo-sources/reiser4-gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r5.ebuild and digest it.

Or you can use hitchhiker-sources from berkano overlay.

Thanks a bunch mate!
It's nice to see that people ARE still experimenting around here :D

It's been a year since I had gentoo on any of my machines, but once one is here, it is impossible to leave :D

Anyway, doing bootstrap ATM (got a corrupted filesystem, doing things now with the SysRescCD).

So if I got it right, I don't even have to make a portage overlay, just make a file, copy paste, call it <kernel-version>.ebuild and then "digest <kernel-version>.ebuild" and can it will normally install? NICE, just today I've been excuse the word bitching at a friend about the need to use overlays :D

Anyway, I'll report progress and problem so people can have a reference, gonna do a wiki entry too, for reiser4-stage1 if everything goes well.
THANKS!!

No, you still need the proper overlay structure.

hey that's pretty interesting please DO keep us updated on this - afaik no one has done this before, don't be surprised if you stumble over a small problem (hopefully not *fingers crossed*) if not

this once again would show how nice reiser4 has matured since 4 years ago :)

Since I never did an overlay, can someone just post me what I have to do to get the "right" overlay?

Sorry once again, It's been a time since I installed a system :D
Also when I was looking around I didn't need any overlays, actually at that time they didn't even exist (atleast not in these way) :D

PS: Not the layman way please...if there is any other way....I don't want anything unecessary on this system.

PSS: Sorry, found a way here: http://sys-admin.org/Reiser4-Gentoo-Sources.html
hope it works, just got the console back from bootstraping, and everything looks fine, also it's all very fast and seems stable this CD is very good (sysrescCD). Well, gonna start emerge -e system now (empty tree, to make sure everything works :D ).
Well then see you tommorow.

hmm, can anyone tell me what is wrong with this? I downloaded the ebouild placed it in /usr/portage/sys-kernel/reiser4-gentoo-sources/
tried "ebuild reiser... digest" and got this:

sysresccd reiser4-gentoo-sources # ebuild reiser4-gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r5.ebuild digest
: command not foundrnel/reiser4-gentoo-sources/reiser4-gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r5.ebuild: line 3:

* The die message:

anyone here got some idea?

Hmm.. Usually I do a:

Code: Select all

ebuild /usr/portage/sys-kernel/reiser4-gentoo-sources/reiser4-gentoo-sources-2.6.27-r5.ebuild digest
Sometimes it can get a bit picky.

If anything else, I'll tar my directory up and send it your way.

You need additional patch for reiser4 code, that was made by Edward later, but this patch is not included in main reiser4 patch. Don't ask me why it isn't included.

You can get it from:
