xf86-video-intel slow or no 2D acceleration

Since updating my drivers from the 2.1.1 stable of xf86-video-i810 to 2.5.1 of the intel drivers, my 2D acceleration has become dramatically slower. When opening or restoring windows, the contents of them can be seen clearly being drawn on the screen. Amarok maybe takes 2-3 seconds to draw itself before it becomes responsive. Anyone know if this is at all to be expected, or if there is clearly something wrong? I have heard that EXA is slow with the drivers but it hasn't become any faster from 2.4.2-2.5.1 and there were supposed to be speed improvements.

I believe I am running on GMA900 integrated graphics, and I have tried with no xorg.conf, and X doesn't start. I have tried with an almost empty xorg.conf however and I have exactly the same results.

I guess that support for your card is "on the way" in the new driver...

BTW You should add evdev to your INPUT_DEVICES and update. (actually when you check that it works, just to be sure, you can remove mouse and keyboard - they're not needed any more)

Sorry a correction, the GMA900 is the core in the chipset, my chipset is a 915G which is supposed to be supported. Also 3D acceleration works fast, just not 2D rendering.

thanks pappy, i just tried this but still the same problem, everything draws slowly and the X process has high cpu usage when opening windows or when the Amarok basic visualisation is running.

In your kernel, do you build the drm 915 driver as a module
or built in to the kernel? Whatever it is, you could try the
other way. Obviously, I'm just grasping at straws here :)

Go through my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and try the various settings I have. You could also just put it instead of yours and see if your acceleration comes back. Also, what does glxgears give as a frame rate?

Cheers for the ideas, tried both (i tried just using your xorg.conf) but sadly no changes :(
My glxgears is showing 550-650 fps.

That's not bad. I have a GM965 (X3100) and glxgears does ~730fps. I guess that's how it's gonna be for some time now.

Yeah 3D rendering is good and fast. I do not have a problem with 3d rendering speed though, this is fine. I am running compiz for example, which renders very smoothly (note that the problem is not solved on completely disabling compiz) It is just 2d rendering that is slow and CPU intensive, more so than it should be. glxgears uses opengl i believe? or at least is an indicator of 3D rendering performance so isn't a good indicator of the problem.

I put in the input bits so i could use X and the driver "intel" option, i think that was it

If glxgears shows anything over 60fps, then you aren't set up properly. Yes, I know this flies in the face of conventional wisdom, but anything over 60fps is a complete waste...and it's sure to screw up openGL screensavers (at least).

I'm at a loss, then. The new intel driver draws slowly on my old Toshiba, but it's old and low on memory. Even the old one took its time.

You might play with the video drivers to see if one version is better than another, and then write a bug report on the issue.

It also makes a difference as to whether or not openGL video and screen savers will render properly, or show up with horizontal tears.

i have x11 v 7.4 and xorg-server 1.5.2 at the moment. i did not upgrade the video driver and x11 at the same time, and before upgrading x11 from 7.2 (i think), i could switch between the old (2.1.1) reverse engineered (i believe?) drivers and the newer intel ones and the intel ones had this problem then too, while the old ones did not. the old ones will not work with x11 7.4 though and they had their problems too so i upgraded anyway. i am just surprised that no one else seems to have encountered this.

I have this problem as well.

Things I did:

1. Instead of logging in on the console and running "startx", I'm now using a display manager (slim), so that X basically runs as root.

2. I've added my user to the "video" group, giving me access to the /dev/dri/* devices.

3. I've played around with driconf to get beyond the 60fps limit on glxgears, which worked, but didn't help to improve 2D performance. I guess I'll disable that one again.

All these things didn't improve my 2D performance at all. To test performance, I open a somehow complex web page (for example with fixed background image, this slows down the Gecko rendering engine of my IceCat (a Firefox flavor) enough) and, erm, quickly rub my mouse scroll wheel up and down. :roll: Simultaneously, I watch "top". What happens is that IceCat eats about 15% CPU (on a dual core system) while X uses about 65%. This is what I'd call "bad performance". :D Also, when you scroll up and down long enough, after letting go the scroll wheel your browser will continue scrolling up and down for some seconds.

Things I noticed:

1. glxgears says "Failed to initialize TTM buffer manager. Falling back to classic.", no idea if that's related.

2. "dmesg|grep drm" says "Initialized i915 1.6.0 20060119 on minor0", but also "[drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 5". However, a thread on Gmane tells me that this is not a problem and should be ignored.

3. /dev/agpgart belongs to root:root and has modes crw-------, which means that only root can access it. However, since X is running as root, this should not be a problem. (Actually, /dev/agpgart will be accessed by the DRM driver, not directly, anyway, right? So this should not be a problem...)

4. My Xorg.0.log has no EE lines, which is good.

5. glxinfo says "direct rendering: Yes", my OpenGL renderer is "Mesa DRI Intel(R) 945GM 20061102 x86/MMX/SSE2".

My hardware is a ThinkPad X60s (Intel 945GM gfx, Core Duo cpu).

My software is xorg-server-1.5.2, xf86-video-intel-2.5.1, Linux 2.6.27-gentoo-r4. DRM and the i915 driver are compiled in-kernel, AGP support and the I8xx chipset driver as well.

I have always had problems with later intel drivers on my Dell Celeron, although not on my Inspiron 1720 dual-core. I just switched my system up to ~arch and the later intel drivers are slower. They're possibly just not as good as 2.1.1.

Now I can't even compile the old 2.1.1 without emerge failing. Something to do with modular X.
