DVB-T mplayer issue (norwegian broadcasts)

Post by iverasp » Thu Nov 20, 2008 11:18 am

Received a Pinnacle 310i DVB-T hybrid card a couple of days ago. Compiled the saa7134 chipset driver from gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r8 which seems to work as when doing modprobe saa7134_dvb dmesg outputs

Code: Select all

DVB: registering new adapter (saa7133[0])
DVB: registering frontend 0 (Philips TDA10046H DVB-T)...
tda1004x: setting up plls for 48MHz sampling clock
tda1004x: found firmware revision 20 -- ok
and I'm able to produce a channels.conf file with w_scan -X which states the correct channel names.

I installed mplayer, ffmpeg and x264 from Ycarus overlay as I've read that other users are able to record and watch DVB-T streams in norway using the SVN repository of mplayer, ffmpeg and x264
MPlayer dev-SVN-r27961
FFmpeg version SVN-r15883
x264 core:65 r0+1028 83baa7f

Still I get no video nor sound from my recordings made with mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile file.ts dvb://NRK2. When trying to play them back I get

Code: Select all

Playing nrk2.ts.
TS file format detected.
VIDEO MPEG2(pid=525) AUDIO MPA(pid=692) NO SUBS (yet)! PROGRAM N. 0
MPEG: FATAL: EOF while searching for sequence header.
Video: Cannot read properties.

Audio: no sound

Exiting... (End of file)
I also found a sample recording at http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=48253 which plays perfectly with both video and sound.
This is getting really frustrating as I do not know what to try next. The norwegian broadcasts are encoded in H.264 video with HE-AAC sound. Does anyone have any experience or clues on how to solve this? Thank you very much.

Don't know if the coding is different in Norway than here in the UK, but I did just about manage to make it work with mplayer here.

I tend to use Xine or sometimes Totem (on Gnome 2.22). On KDE, In know Kaffeine works well too. These tools, in my view, have much better support for DVB broadcasts. I would try with any of them first. It might be that your problem is caused by mplayer itself.

Xine would not work either (running tzap NRK2 -r in background and starting xine with xine /dev/dvb/adaptor0/dvr0). The coding is very different in the UK. Support for the video and especially audio in norwegian streams came recent and from what I've read on the net only mplayer is able to view the live streams on linux.

Hmm, well, most likely a missing codec I would think. How about faad2, or is that a different variant of AAC?
