Installing Gentoo on Dell Optiplex 755

Hi,

I'm trying to install gentoo on this new Dell Optiplex 755, it has an 256MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO. I'm just wondering if anyone would have the best configuration for my xorg.conf and make.conf. I would really appreciate the help. Thank You. I will keep this topic open with my development so that anyone else who might start trying to install gentoo on these machines get some help too.

Hi, I think you'll need to use the ati-drivers package for that card, not the open-source radeon drivers. Here are a couple links that might help:

I have nvidia so I can't give any examples, but IIRC the ATI drivers have a tool to generate an xorg.conf for you

No. The open source drivers work fine. Set VIDEO_CARDS="radeon".

X can auto-configure itself in the usual manner.

I have this same computer with two monitors. The ATI drivers (fglrx) blow so bad. I'd like to try to configure for radeon. Is it possible to use the two monitors? Starting X without any xorg.conf gives me only one monitor. When I use my old xorg.conf while replacing fglrx with radeon I get the same results as I had without a config.

I did change the VIDEO_CARDS line and recompile mesa and xorg-server.
