gnome-settings-daemon issue 2.24

  • Quote

Post by hollovoid7 » Fri Nov 07, 2008 6:36 pm

I am having an issue with gnome-settings-daemon not starting after gnome 2.24 packages came in. At login gnome warns me that gnome-settings-daemon could not be started and will try to restart at next login. I have tried running the daemon at the command prompt with --debug flagged and there is no output to go by.

I am running amd64 unstable and this is the packages in the tree, not an overlay. My themes obviously do not work because of this. And as a side note, logout restart and shutdown do nothing now as well. If someone could point me in the direction of how to diagnose this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, a little update, my themes work if I start the gnome appearance properties, like it switches on right when it opens. I have since tried to run gnome-settings-daemon not daemonized, with and without debug, and im getting no clue as to why it wont start. Nothing in the logs, (unless there is a spot I havent checked, but ive looked all through /var/log). Anybody an idea?

Same problem here. Actually for 1 or 2 weeks already but I expected it to be fixed with the current gnome-settings-daemon-2.24 update. It's not.....

Same error messages as above and currently no idea of a fix. I'm anxious to see if the bug report will supply us with an answer.

The bug report said to try an explicit revdep-rebuild. I'm working on it right now.

I'm seeing the same problem. I'll just wait for it to go
away with an update.

Well im glad im not the only one. I rebuilt my whole system along with world, with no package failures, and no broken libraries detected through revdep-rebuild. It happened after an update, but there was so much in the update, and I had emerged something after it so the log of what had been emerged was lost (it only saves the results of your last emerge). Now that im looking through the boards, im kind of wondering why they allowed 2.24 in the tree, there are SO many things that the devs are admitting dont work... why not keep it masked? Kinda seems irresponsible, but thats me.

I did a "revdep-rebuild" and a "emerge @preserved-rebuild". After those runs I re-emerged gnome-settings-daemon and it works now without the error. But The "logout" and "shutdown" menu items don't work anymore.

gnome-settings-daemon

  • Quote

Post by sommersg » Sun Nov 09, 2008 7:58 pm

Hey all,
I just updated to gnome 2.24 and also installed ldap support on a bunch of stuff... everything works fine except that every time I start gnome, gnome-settings-daemon crashes with error code 0 (unknown error). Also, once the menu links for logout and shutdown don't work (though I can perform these actions from the command line ok). Also, if I open the appearances settings dialog, this restarts the settings daemon and my visual settings all come back, only the inability to logout persists. I've also got compiz and messed with some window manager stuff but I've tried creating new users and the problem persists so I believe it to be seperate from a configuration issue. Has anyone else seen this? Any thoughts as to what might be wrong here? Any help would be really appreciated as I'm not really sure where the problem might lie at this point...

this issue is unsolved for me.
i ran both "revdep-rebuild" and "emerge @preserved-rebuild".
now the former only wants to rebuild my gcc's, which is normal, since i have the gcj useflag enabled. this issue is years old.
the latter only wants to rebuild epiphany, which is broken for some reason i don't care about right now.
afterwards i re-emerged g-s-d and restarted X. same situation as before.
any ideas?

Somebody added that there's a similar bug in Mandriva. People are investigating whether it might be an upstream problem.

gnome-session-2.24.1

  • Quote

Post by megaflow » Sun Nov 09, 2008 10:33 pm

I solved the problem. By installing gnome-session-2.24.1
it is still not in portage.
use my ebuild http://users.skynet.be/fa094603/gnome-s ... 4.1.ebuild
put it in your overlay
Dit someone forget to send it to portage ?
copy the director from /use/portage/gnome/gnome-session/files --> local/portage/gnome/gnome-session
so u can use the branding flag

Gnome-session-2.24 loses support for session-saving completely which is why it's not in portage.

Oh and that ebuild does not work if you have the "branding" useflag enabled cause it will try to apply a non-existing patch.

USE="-branding" ...
Thanks so much dude, the ebuild worked great and it fixed the problem. Hopefully the gnome developers will get an official one into the portage tree soon. As far as session saving, I don't use it anyway and I'd rather a system that works than a feature I don't use anyday.. :P
Thanks again!

You can also find gnome-session-2.24.1 in the overlay "gnome".

Code: Select all

# layman -a gnome
# emerge -uaDN @system @world
After that, I had to do 3 things:
1- emerge @preserved-rebuild
2- Compile all packages for compiz-fusion
3- Add my start script in gnome-session...which disappaered!!!

Now, all works (apparently ?) fine. :D

Fine! ……and put the file to "/usr/share/gnome/" names "default.session".

Code: Select all

# This is the default session that is launched if the user doesn't
# already have a session.
# The RestartCommand specifies the command to run from the $PATH.
# The Priority determines the order in which the commands are started
# (with Priority = 0 first) and defaults to 50.
# The id provides a name that is unique within this file and passed to the
# app as the client id which it must use to register with gnome-session.
# The clients must be numbered from 0 to the value of num_clients - 1.

[Default]
num_clients=4
0,id=default0
0,Priority=60
0,RestartCommand=pam-panel-icon --sm-client-id default0
1,id=default1
1,Priority=10
1,RestartCommand=gnome-wm --default-wm gnome-wm --sm-client-id default1
2,id=default2
2,Priority=40
2,RestartCommand=gnome-panel --sm-client-id default2
3,id=default3
3,Priority=40
3,RestartCommand=nautilus --no-default-window --sm-client-id default3
