Both Firefox and Sea Monkey crashing after last update

  • Quote

Post by Tuxenstein » Sun Nov 02, 2008 2:23 am

I'm not entirely sure what's causing this, but it only appears to have started following my finally updating them earlier this month and only with certain sites.

In looking into this, I noticed that it seems to happen with those same sites if I have javascript enabled--once it's disabled, the sites can usually load, but in some cases, there really isn't much of anything I can really do with them.

However, it isn't happening with all sites which are using javascript--only some (Newegg, Photobucket, and even Firefox's add-ons site being three I can think of, off-hand, where I've seen the crashing--and it happens each and every time with those sites and others like them where this has been an issue). With most sites that make use of it, I don't have any problems in this area. It also only appears to be affecting those two browsers.

I've never had anything like this happen and have absolutely no idea what may be causing this or go about fixing it. Unfortunately, rolling back both browsers is not an option for me and while I do have other browsers, there are some tasks and sites I can't use them on and would require them.

Any help will be appreciated! Thanks! :)

firefox used to do this to me on occasion with java (not js) and flash. do any of those sites use them?

what exactly causes the crash? do you click on something, and then firefox disappears (crashes)? is it during the page load? is it after you scroll down the page a bit?

cheers

Of the sites this has happened with, some do use Flash but not all of them (I don't believe, for instance, that Firefox's add-ons site does--however, I also can't get into them right now to verify this).

The situation usually happens as follows: I type in a website address to try and get into it and then usually within the first few seconds or so of loading, the browser disappears. This happens for both Sea Monkey and Firefox alike.

I updated my system on the weekend, and I am also having this issue with some sites, this one for example:

http://www.boingboing.net/2008/10/29/hs ... l#comments

I am able to open it with konqueror. I never had this behaviour before with firefox, and I am having it with different sites after the update. This is the version and use flags I am using:

Code: Select all

[ebuild R ] www-client/mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.17 USE="debug java mozdevelop xforms xinerama -bindist -filepicker -gnome -iceweasel -ipv6 -moznopango -restrict-javascript -xprint" LINGUAS="ca en es -af -ar -be -bg -cs -da -de -el -en_GB -en_US -es_AR -es_ES -eu -fi -fr -fy -fy_NL -ga -ga_IE -gu -gu_IN -he -hu -it -ja -ka -ko -ku -lt -mk -mn -nb -nb_NO -nl -nn -nn_NO -pa -pa_IN -pl -pt -pt_BR -pt_PT -ro -ru -sk -sl -sv -sv_SE -tr -uk -zh -zh_CN -zh_TW" 0 kB
Cheers!

Update: In my case, it seems related with flash, but not always  I can play youtube videos in firefox. Nevertheless, when I go to the Adobe Flash page:

http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/

Firefox crashes, and konqueror says I am using version 9.0.115.0. Equery thinks differently:

Code: Select all

 # equery list -p netscape-flash
[ Searching for package 'netscape-flash' in all categories among: ]
 * installed packages
[I--] [ ] net-www/netscape-flash-10.0.12.36-r1 (0)
 * Portage tree (/usr/portage)
[-P-] [M ] net-www/netscape-flash-9.0.124.0 (0)
Let me know if you have any improvements on the issue.

Cheers!

Check your net-misc/curl for nss useflag.
The konqueror problem is unrelated to this hint.

Thanks for the clue!

I had the nss useflag disabled. I enabled the use flag an emerged curl:

Code: Select all

# emerge -av curl

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] net-misc/curl-7.18.2 USE="gnutls idn nss ssl -ares -ipv6 -kerberos -ldap -libssh2 -test" 0 kB
I am still having the same behavior with the above links: firefox crashes before the page can be seen.

Cheers!

Same behavior

  • Quote

Post by sargek » Wed Nov 05, 2008 1:32 am

I am getting the same behavior with both Firefox and Opera. I can't tell exactly what it is related to - sometimes the browser(s) just go "poof" and they are gone, other times it's when I am viewing a video on youtube or something and they just disappear. Quite annoying. Can't remember if Seamonkey did this - haven't used in a few months. Both browsers gracefully recover by offering to go back to my last session, so that appears to work, but just not sure why they crash. I think I need to start starting them in a terminal to see if I can capture the output.

I got the crash problem too for firefox after emerging world for x86 last week; the problem disappeared downgrading netscape-flash from 10.0.12.36-r1 to masked version 9.0.124.0; after that I emerged curl-7.19.0 keeping my usual flags including -nss , re-emerged netscape-flash-10.0.12.36-r1 and firefox stopped crashing, at least for my usual sites (home banking in particular)!

In the occasion, I discovered the firefox add-on flashblock, which prevents starting of those annoying flash animations ....

Thanks very much for the tip. I have tried it, but it did not seem to work. In order to have the same test, can you see adobe flash page?:

Yes, one of the good things of all this has been to discover this add-on. I am nevertheless having crashes with the add-on activated.

Cheers!

Update: In case it is relevant, these are the messages I get in .xsession-errors from after I press the link till firefox crashes.

According to that Adobe page, I seem to be running 9,0,124,0 (which is also the most recent version listed in portage for the architecture I'm using: x86).

This is strange. I cannot see the adobe page in firefox (it crashes before I can see anything) no matter if I have netscape-flash installed or not. After uninstalling and installing netscape-flash, and updating the location of libflashpaler.so in konqueror, konqueror shows me the version of flash I am running in my system (10.0.12.36).
Tuxenstein wrote:According to that Adobe page, I seem to be running 9,0,124,0 (which is also the most recent version listed in portage for the architecture I'm using: x86).
I am using x86 architecture. I was using netscape-flash version 9,0,124,0 without issues any before I updated my system.

I am not sure how to find where is the error. Could you give me your mozilla-firefox use-flags? Mine are:

Code: Select all

www-client/mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.17 USE="debug java mozdevelop xforms xinerama -bindist -filepicker -gnome -iceweasel -ipv6 -moznopango -restrict-javascript -xprint"
Thanks!

I'm also going through random crashes with Seamonkey 1.12 but not Firefox 3.0.3. It appears to happen when a page contains elements it somehow can't cope with (when it did before the last update). For ex, loading a page that's just a .txt. Or gizmodo.com's homepage which contains so much stuff... It's *definitely* not Flash related for me since I use flashblock by default on every page, and youtubesque stuff never causes a glitch. My USE flags are:

Code: Select all

www-client/seamonkey Installed versions: 1.1.12(14:25:12 11/03/08)(crypt gnome ipv6 ldap -debug -java -mozdevelop -moznocompose -moznoirc -moznomail -moznopango -moznoroaming -postgres -xforms -xinerama -xprint)

Code: Select all

www-client/mozilla-firefox Installed versions: 3.0.3(23:38:43 10/07/08)(dbus gnome ipv6 startup-notification xulrunner -bindist -custom-optimization -iceweasel -java -linguas_af -linguas_ar -linguas_be -linguas_bn -linguas_bn_IN -linguas_ca -linguas_cs -linguas_da -linguas_de -linguas_el -linguas_en -linguas_en_GB -linguas_en_US -linguas_es -linguas_es_AR -linguas_es_ES -linguas_eu -linguas_fi -linguas_fr -linguas_fy -linguas_fy_NL -linguas_ga -linguas_ga_IE -linguas_gl -linguas_gu -linguas_gu_IN -linguas_he -linguas_hi -linguas_hi_IN -linguas_hu -linguas_id -linguas_is -linguas_it -linguas_ja -linguas_ka -linguas_kn -linguas_ko -linguas_ku -linguas_lt -linguas_mk -linguas_mn -linguas_mr -linguas_nb -linguas_nb_NO -linguas_nl -linguas_nn -linguas_nn_NO -linguas_pa -linguas_pa_IN -linguas_pl -linguas_pt -linguas_pt_BR -linguas_pt_PT -linguas_ro -linguas_ru -linguas_si -linguas_sk -linguas_sl -linguas_sq -linguas_sr -linguas_sv -linguas_sv_SE -linguas_th -linguas_tr -linguas_uk -linguas_zh -linguas_zh_CN -linguas_zh_TW -mozdevelop -restrict-javascript)
I've tried recompiling both xulrunner 1.9 and seamonkey to no avail... can't work it out. I've had this issue on occasion a few years back but usually a good emerge -uDNv world would solve it. I'm not too tempted to do a emerge -e world though. Any help much appreciated.

mimosinnet, try and disable javascript to get that page to load. For whatever reason, disabling javascript seems to be the only way to get some pages not to cause the browser(s) to crash. However, that still doesn't explain as to why some sites that use Flash, Java or Javascript load fine for me and others cause this problem. :?

I'm not sure if this was what you're looking for, but according to eix, this is what came up for me with respect to useflags for Firefox (I'm still running FF 2.0.0.17 as 3.0 was not available in portage it seemed when I was emerging):
(bindist debug gnome ipv6 java -filepicker -iceweasel -linguas_af -linguas_ar -linguas_be -linguas_bg -linguas_ca -linguas_cs -linguas_da -linguas_de -linguas_el -linguas_en -linguas_en_GB -linguas_en_US -linguas_es -linguas_es_AR -linguas_es_ES -linguas_eu -linguas_fi -linguas_fr -linguas_fy -linguas_fy_NL -linguas_ga -linguas_ga_IE -linguas_gu -linguas_gu_IN -linguas_he -linguas_hu -linguas_it -linguas_ja -linguas_ka -linguas_ko -linguas_ku -linguas_lt -linguas_mk -linguas_mn -linguas_nb -linguas_nb_NO -linguas_nl -linguas_nn -linguas_nn_NO -linguas_pa -linguas_pa_IN -linguas_pl -linguas_pt -linguas_pt_BR -linguas_pt_PT -linguas_ro -linguas_ru -linguas_sk -linguas_sl -linguas_sv -linguas_sv_SE -linguas_tr -linguas_uk -linguas_zh -linguas_zh_CN -linguas_zh_TW -mozdevelop -moznopango -restrict-javascript -xforms -xinerama -xprint)
The italicized portion appears in red in eix.

For Sea Monkey (1.1.12), I got this:
(crypt debug gnome ipv6 java postgres -ldap -mozdevelop -moznocompose -moznoirc -moznomail -moznopango -moznoroaming -xforms -xinerama -xprint)
Again, italicized text is actually in red.

Also, not that it really matters to me personally as it's the same browser (just a different name) and I remember it being this way before (I can't remember now just how long ago this was, but I remember the reason had something to do with licensing issues or trademark protection and, at some point, it went back to the original name), but is it just me that now has Firefox showing up as Bon Echo?

Tuxenstein! Thanks very much for the tip. I can now load adobe web page (and other pages) without crashing. Having firefox randomly crashing is very annoying, so I will leave javascript disabled for a while.

Yes, you are right! I remember having firefox showing as Bon Echo some time ago. It shows now as firefox, although I must say I changed computer, so it is possible you are carrying the old name with the updates.

Thanks very much for opening the thread and giving me a solution :-) :-) :-)

Don't you mean: "it was not marked stable", as it had been in the tree for months now.

As for my earlier post - I was misunderstood.
It was setting nss flag in curl, that caused crashes in Flash 10,
but that was fixed in the latest curl.

BTW, for those nss related crashes, flashblock was not helping.

VoidMage, that's exactly what I meant to say. Sorry, I just didn't word it correctly. I remember FF3 being in portage sometime after its release, but it just wasn't marked "stable" yet.

Hopefully, someone knows of a solution to this that doesn't involve keeping javascript disabled and/or knows what is actually causing this problem. :?

The only fully functional way I've found around these problems (after crashing got markedly worse this week post updating to gnome 2.24) is to use seamonkey-bin instead of seamonkey. Since then, any page loads fine. Not perfect but it does the job...

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I think I'll hold off on going with the bin version for the time being, at least, as I think I may have other packages that may need to be rebuilt and after all the problems I ran into during my last major emerge and update, I'm almost reluctant to want to have another go at it with dependencies.

Yes, I can. It informs me "You have version 10,0,12,36 installed"
I have updated firefox to 2.0.0.18 and I can now see the adobe flash page without crashes.

Thanks for all the comments!
